C., Thursday, Dec. 17, 1970—PAGE 7 Patrol to be in full force for holidays The South Carolina Highway Patrol will be out in full force over Christmas holidays, ac cording to the South Carolina Highway Department. Each patrolman has been in structed as to needed enforce ment action in the area to which he is assigned, Colonel P. F. Thompson, Director of the Department’s Traffic Law Enforcement Division announ ced. “We have asked patrolmen to give special attention to all mov ing hazardous violations with out exception; particularly, to driving while intoxicated,” Co lonel Thompson said. This is the first Christmas that patrolmen have had the implied consent law to work with in the realm of apprehend ing the drinking driver. This law, which went into effect last February has already provided a meaningful tool for traffic law enforcement officers, show ing, concretely, in the fact that convictions for driving under the influence of intoxicating li quor have risen more than 100 per cent in the past nine months. “We are aware that the fes tive spirit that surrounds the Christmas Holidays unfortunate ly adds to more danger on our highway s,” said Colonel Thompson. “The patrol expects to do everything in its power to see that South Carolina High ways are as safe as possible from dangerous violators dur ing this season. All available devices including radar, un marked cars and spare patrol vehicles will be utilized to the fullest. Concentrated patrol and driver checks are of major im portance,” he said. Last year 17 persons were killed during the four-day holi day period December 24 through 27. “We don’t want history to repeat itself in this instance,” Colonel Thompson said. Miss Wood, who is enrolled in the legal secretarial program at Palmer, has pledged Phi Chi Sigma sorority. She is a daugh ter of Earl Wood of 2320 Harp er St., and Mrs. Agnes Wood of P. O. Box 635, Newberry. She is a 1969 graduate of New berry High School. Wilson is a son of Mrs. Ra chel Wilson of 612 Snowden Circle in Newberry. He has joined Pi Beta Chi fraternity at the college. 1420 College Street GEORGE WAY • MANAGER • kora all ofusatAP Mrs. Schumpert dies Monday Mrs. Mattie Wicker Schum pert, 88, widow of Ira Burton Schumpert, died Monday in Lex ington. Born near Prosperity, daugh ter of the late Franklin Pierce and Texanna Cook Wicker, she was a member of Cannon’s Creek ARP Church. Surviving are a son, Frank M. Schumpert of Jacksonville, Fla.; two daughters, Mrs. J. C. Morrison of Columbia and Mrs. Jesse W. Lewis of Pros perity; and three grandsons. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at McSwain Funeral Home. Burial was in Prosperity Cemetery.
