College seniors preparing to teach and teachers applying for positions in school systems which encourage or require ap plicants to submit their scores on the National Teacher Exa minations along with their other credentials are eligible to take the tests. Last year more than 105.000 candidates took t he examinations, which are pre pared and administered by Edu- c a t i o n a 1 Testing Service of Princeton, New Jersey. The designation of Newberry College as a test center for these examinations will give prospective teachers in this area an opportunity to compare their performance on the examina tions with candidates through out the country who take the tests, Setzler said. At the one-day session, a can didate may take the Common Examinations, which include tests in Professional Education and General Education, and one of the twenty-four Area Exami nations which are designed to evaluate his understanding of the subject matter and methods applicable to the area he may be assigned to teach.. Fowler, Po- maria, receives 2,000 pine seed lings from the Westvaco Wood- yard at Prosperity. Lyon Fel lers, manager of the Westvaca Woodyard at Prosperity, gave 142,000 pine seedlings to 4-H Club and FFA members re cently. Dennis is a member of the Mid-Carolina 4-H Club and For estry is one of the projects he is carrying out. Teacher Exams to be held here Newberry College has been designated as a test center for administering the National Tea- In a church where 1 used to be the minister, I had a man who was will ing to do anything he could in the way of carpenter work for the church. The fellow was a pretty good carpenter and anytime the church needed some thing done we could depend on him to do it. Another Fellow Now in that same church there was another fellow who was also, sup posedly, a very good carpenter. Quite often the church asked him to do something in the way of carpenter work for the church. However, it al ways seemed as though this fellow had something else more important to do. He never found time to get around to doing any work for the church. ( Mice we needed some work done in ! he chundi utchen. W e asked the man who was always busy to do it for us. As u.Niial, lie was busy and couldn’t manage In work it into his schedule. So we asked the other fellow if he could do the work lor the church. As usual, he said he would do the best he could just as soon as he could. Is wasn! many days till he was working hard in the church kitchen. The job took him several days, and when he got through be had done a pretty good job. When time came to pay him for his work, he wouldn’t take a penny. No matter how hard we tried to get him to accept something for his wi.rk, ho refused to accept any pay. Within a matter of a couple of weeks after the work had been finished, the man who was too busy to help showed up to inspect the work. He al ways managed to get around after the work was completed. And, as usual, he began to find defects in the work manship of the fellow who did the work. Pointing them out, he assured everyone that if he had done the work himself he would have done a better job. People Like That Well, I guess all of us know people like that. When you need them to help, they just can’t manage to be present. They always have some very good and valid reason to excuse themselves. But the moment the job it completed, they show up criticizing the one who did the work and explaining to everyone how the work should have been done. The world we live in is a small world, and there just isn’t enough room for that type of person. If a man wants to work beside me, sweat with me on the job, cry with me in the heartbreak, and help me keep plug ging away when things go wrong—I will listen to his criticizism and accept it as valid. But for the man who is un willing to join in, for the man who is unwilling to sweat and cry and plug away with me—-his criticizism only shows his smallness. As I look back I realize that I really don’t know what type carpenter the critical fellow was. I can’t remember ever seeing anything he built! And while the man who did the work made some mistakes, at least he did do something—the best he could! If I read the Good Book right, we won’t be judged on how good we could have done some task. Our ability will not be taken into consideration. But we will be judged on what we did with what we had to do with. Prospective teachers plan ning to take the tests should obtain their Bulletins of Infor mation promptly, Setzler ad vised. Food stamp use up 57 percent Newberry County residents re ceiving l T . S. Department of Agriculture il'SDAi food stamp assistance increased 57 percent in November as compared for the same period last year. Coder the food stamp pro gram certified families ex change the amount of money they have been spending on food each month for CSDA food coupons. Depending upon the size of their family and other factors, they then receive an additional amount of coupons free of charge to help them buy more food. Hie amount of money eligi ble families are required to ex change for food coupons is re luted to the amount they could normally be expected to spend for food included in the food stamp program. They are then issued an additional amount to permit them to buy more, and even better, foods. Families who receive welfare checks will continue to receive their full checks if they parti cipate in the food stamp pro gram. In fact, by taking part in the program, recipients will receive a “raise’’ in their food buying power each month. Families do not have to be receiving welfare help to be eligible for food stamp assis tance. Many persons in the se nior citizens group, for exam ple, are eligible for food stamo help. Other low-income families also may receive food coupons provided their family income is not over specified amounts. The Newberry County Public Welfare Department continues to accept applications from per sons who have not yet applied for food stamp assistance. Per sons from low-income families who feel they may be eligible for assistnace under the Food Stamp Program may apply by going to the application office at 1328 College Street in New berry.
