WHITMIRE
NAMED FOR
1st SETTLER
The town of Whitmire bears
the name of its first settler,
John Frederick Whitmire, a
German Immigrant, who came
to tills country in the 18th
century. Other early settlers
is.
Whitmire’s Trading Post,
Tavern and Stage Coach Stop
became the Town of Whitmire
in 1891, about the time of the
building of the Georgia-
Carolina and Northern Rail
road. Called “The Pearl of the
Piedmont* the town is situated
in the fork of Duncan’s Creek
and Enoree River, in the off-
corner of Newberry County,
only a stone’s throw from
Union County and less than
3 miles from Laurens County.
William Coleman, of Union
County and Colonial Ancestry,
came to Whitmire in 1902. He
built a Cotton Mill and laid out
a village. The economy of the
town was then as it is now
based on this textile plant, now
the J.P. Stevens and Co. Inc.
During World War n 90%
of the Mill, known for the man
ufacture of fine cotton cloth,
was devoted to the war effort.
Of the 1,400 workers employed
at that time 618 served in the
armed forces of this number
18 gave the supreme sacrifice
for their country.
In 1916 the town suffered a
disastorious fire that swept
away the entire business dis
trict Before the ashes were
cold the rebuilding of a bigger
and safer district was begun.
For nearly 200 years Whit
mire folks have been known to
be lovers of sports and in thie
century avid supporters of ath
letic teams. They are great
hunters and fishers and tellers
of tall tales.
Whitmire is a typical small
town. One finds here good people
who make good neighbors; water
in plentiful supply; good chur
ches, also in plentiful supply;
a medical center; a volunteer
fire dept; a rescue Squad; an
attractive National Guard Ar
mory; a well-dquipped Public
Library, built as a memorial
to the war dead; a weekly news
paper; a beautiful 9 hole golf
course along the banks of the
Enoree River and a fine gym
nasium, recently built and paid
for with volunteer contribu
tions.
A typically, American small
town of the south; a good place
to live and where visitors are
always welcome.
