According to the Clemson University School of Architecture, the building “is firmly dated but incompletely documented” and “a very good ex ample of eclectic design from the latst quarter of the 19th century”. It is listed in “The National Register of Histone Places.” Viewers should note the entrance, the shape and construction of window openings, the rich, heavy brick ornamentation. The Newberry Herald of August 25, 1880, stated that the plans were drawn by G. L. Normann. Con tractors were Wells and Cline. The building was dedicated February 1882. For many years the Opera House Was the center of cultural and civic activities for the Newberry community. Now toe ground floor houses the offices of City Hall. Res toration plans are underway and it is hoped that once again toe stage will present Rs performers to Opera House audiences. Except f - - ^ louse audiences.
