JENNINGS BRYAN DORN Your Congressman West victory is predicted W. Frank Partridge, New berry County Chairman for John West for Governor, said today West’s campaign “is pick ing up steam in our county,” and predicted a West Victory in November. Partridge added that “people here are realizing more and more that a man of John’s ex perience, intelligence and dedi cation is what we must have to lead our State into the de cade of the 70’s.” “Now more than ever before, South Carolina is in a period when strong, progressive leader ship is needed,” Partridge said. “We need a man who knows how to run a billion-dollar busi ness like state government has become.” The Chairman noted that “it’s easy to run a campaign by ap pealing to emotions and com plaining about problems. But Mr. West has already played a leading role in solving many of the problems which our peo ple have faced and is basing his campaign on more solutions to existing problems.” Partridge had praise for West’s “Positive Plans for Pro gress” which the Lieutenant Go vernor has been outlining dur ing his campaign. “I believe South Carolinians have a right to know what a candidate pro poses to do if elected. I’m proud of the fact that Mr. West is squarely meeting the pro blems we face and spelling out constructive solutions to them.” The Chairman said he thinks the active campaigning of Vice President Spiro T. Agnew and Senator Strom Thurmond for the Republican gubernatorial candidate “may well do more harm than good for their can didate.” “We believe the South Caro linian is an independent thinker who resents others, particularly outsiders, telling him how to cast his vote.” “I don’t believe our citizens will appreciate Washington of ficials invading our State to campaign for any candidate. Nor do we think they want a Governor who will be in the political debt of any national administration.” Indians topple Concord Lions The Newberry College Indians defeated the Concord College Mountain Lions 41-6 before a sparse crowd in Athens, W. Va. Because of a severe water shortage the entire student body has been out since Tuesday. The Indians ruined the would- be homecoming with 5 second half TD’s, three of which were spearheaded by freshman quar terback Tommy Williamson. It was a defensive battle dur ing the first half as rain pla gued the offenses of the teams. Newberry finally managed to get on the scoreboard with one second remaining in the half on a 4-yard Williamson to Keith McAlister pass. The Newberry defense managed to hold Con cord to only 15 yards during the first half. The second half belonged to the Indians however, as touch downs by Howdy Hayes, Chuck Beaty, Tommy Williamson, and Lamar Prosser proved more than the Mountain Lions could bear. “I am pleased with our per formance, it is really great to win,” commented Indian head coach Fred Herren. “I am espe cially pleased with our passing game (13 completions for 19 at tempts for 164 yards). We were going to go to the air more if the opportunity arose. I was glad we did,” continued the ju bilant coach. “The big one is next week against Wofford. They have the strongest team they have had in some time, but I think we will be ready for them,” con cluded Herren. This is Newberry’s second victory over three losses.
