What about the race for Go
vernor of S. C " The time is
right upon us So what is what 9
Since I am confined by a com
bination of blindness and lame
ness I have time to think over
politics el the State'.
As I sec the situation with
my blind eyes, here it is A
man 1 have long admired and
who is still a member of Con
gress and he is the Republican
candidate for governor- Albert
Watson. Mr Watson seems to
have read many of my articles
and he generously endorsed
them 1 list'd to hear from him
occasionally m Columbia. 1 am
told that Mr Watson is a na
me of Sumter County. 1 have
heard that some master politi
cal strategist has prepared a
plan to elect Mr Watson gover
nor and then he would be a
candidate for C. S Senator in
the next vacancy That will give
us two Republicans in the Se-
nate-Strom Thurmond and Al
bert Watson. They would be a
very fine and forceful pair repre
senting us in the U. S. Senate.
1 think they would serve us
admirably. The first step would
be to elect Mr. Watson governor
of our state. I repeat what I
have often said. That Strom
Thurmond is one of the ablest
workers in the Senate, So Strom
and Watson would give us two
of the best workers in the Se
nate.

Charles Town Landing has
had over 250,000 visitors since
the opening. Mr. and Mrs, Billy
Bolding and their children of
Oak Grove, La. were the ones
who brought the number to
250.000. They were shown spe
cial attention.
Do you attend Sunday School?
The newspapers told us early
last week that Nassar, Presi
dent of Egypt, had died. A re
cent Sunday School lesson told
something about Egypt I may
astonish you by saying that
Egypt has been a big nation
since early days in the Bible.
The Sons of Jacob went from
Canaan to Egypt to buy grain.
There they found Joseph, their
brother, now the second man in
the Empire and he was the one
they had sold into slavery.
All these thousands of years
Egypt has continued as a Na
tion. Since the early days of
Egypt many great Empires and
Kingdoms have risen and fallen
but Egypt still exists.
In recent years Egypt has ta
ken the part of Arabia against
the black country on the Medi
terranean. and is still very
much alive.
The death of President Nas
sar may bring about great con
fusion among the Nations along
the Mediterranean. The United
States, England, France and
probably Turkey may become
involved.
Parents Day to
be Saturday
About 600 parents are ex
pected on the Newberry College
campus Saturday, for the 12th
annual Parents’ Day program,
according to Philip Kelly, di
rector of alumni activities for
the College.
Registration for the annual
event sponsored by the Alumni
Association begins at noon in
Wright Hall The formal
program begins at 2 p.m. in the
Wiles Chapel with musical se
lections by students and a wel
come from President A G. D.
Wiles.
Punt, Pass, Kick
winners named
Fifteen local boys took tro
phies home October 3 from the
annual Punt, Pass, and Kick
competition that was sponsored
by the Ford Motor Company.
Tommy Nichols, Robby Les
ter, Davia Wiseman, Jimmy
Lever, Randy Stocks, Gregg
Taylor, Randy Swift, Johnny
Nickols, Bill Wiseman, Berry
Hester, Kenny Bowers, Willie
Scott, Hal Burgess, Mike Wil
lingham, Robert Adams, Dar
rell Williams, Robert Carley,
and Jerry Willingham all took
home the first three place tro
phies.
Competition was held for each
age group between the ages of
eight and 13 years of age.
The first place winners went
to Columbia to compete in the
Zone Saturday, October 10. Rep
resenting Newberry in this Zone

competition were David Wise
man 8, Greg Taylor 9, Bill Wise,,
man 10, Willie Scott 11, Gerry
Willingham 12, and Robert A-
dams 13.
The Wiseman brothers made
an excellent showing at the
competition as Bill Wiseman in
the 10 year old Division took
First Place and brother David
took the runner up place in
the 8 year olds.
This is the first time a boy
from Newberry has been able
to progress beyond the Zone
Competition. Only the first place
winner in each age group is
able to progress to the diffe
rent division levels to compete.
This coming Saturday, Octo
ber 17 Bill Wiseman will be
representing Newberry in the
District Competition in Char
lotte, North Carolina.
