C., Thursday, October 8,1970 Indians downed for third time The 'Newberry Indians suf fered their third loss of the season Saturday night at the hands of the Lenoir Rhyne Bears 37-19. Newberry held its own a- gainst the Bears for three quar ters, scoring two touchdowns in the second on explosive 76 and 64 yard runs by Donald Gar rick and Jimmy Fulton respec tively. Newberry trailed by only three points at halftime. It was Garrick again in the third quarter. The Carolina’s Conference rushing leader romped 65 yards from the Bear 28. Four plays later he scored from the five. A Newberry fumble in the fourth on the Bear 20 put the game in jeopardy for the In dians. A ten yard pass from Leioir Rhyne’s Mike McRee to wingback Charlie Heye with 3 minutes remaining put the game out of reach for the tribe. Newberry’s Donald Garrick was the leading rusher in the contest with 16 carries for 208 yards. Lenoir Rhyne’s Mike Porter had 27 carries for 131 yards. This is Newberry’s third loss to one victory and Lenoir Rhyne’s second win against two losses. Faith Lutheran groundbreaking to be held On October 11, at 5:00 P. M., Faith Lutheran Church will break ground to begin the con struction of a new educational building. Faith is a mission church of the Lutheran Church in America, and the new faci lity will be financed for three years by the LCA’s Board of American Missions. Three Sunday school rooms, a nursery-kitchenette area, a secretary’s office, a pastor’s study, and new rest-room faci lities will be added. During construction a major portion of the existing building will also be renovated, and a new en trance will be created on the Preston Street side of the church. The cost for construction is estimated to be around $70,000. The building was designed by the Tarleton-Tankersly Archi tectural Group of Greenville, and the Ralph Lee Construction Company of Greenville will be the builder; this construction company has built ninety-five churches in the past fifteen years. Faith church is located at the corner of Harrington Street and By-Pass Seventy-Six. John Hammond, of the C—P Corpora tion, is Building chairman and the Rev. William Stone is pas tor. Kendall aides ten scholars Ten students at Newberry College have been chosen as Kendall Scholars for the 1970- 71 school year according to Newberry’s President Dr. A. G. D. Wiles. The scholarships, sponsored by the Kendall Company Foun dation, are awarded annually to academically qualified and financially needy students with first preference given to New berry County residents. The Kendall Company, parent organization of the Foundation, is an international textile manu facturer that operates two plants in Newberry. Kendall Scholars for this year are Carroll E. Kinard announced today that random selection number 187 is the highest lottery selection number reached in 1970. However, the board spokes man said, it may be necessary to go to a higher random se quence number than the pre vious high number in order to satisfy the remaining 1970 draft calls. Clerk Kinard said that in com pliance with the White House Executive Order announced re cently, all registrants of Local Board No. 36 who hold the high est reached number or num bers below the highest reached number and who have not been issued orders for induction due to any circumstances, will be considered for carryover into the extended priority selection group if they are classified I-A as of December 31, 1970. Such young men will have their liabi lity for induction extended for the first three months of 1971. The local board spokesman said that the Executive Order states that registrants who held numbers above the highest rea ched number of Board No. 36 and are classified I—A on De cember 31, will be placed in a lower draft priority group on January 1. CLUB TO VISIT UNIVERSITY Members of the Newberry Fine Arts Club will tour the internationally famous Bob Jones University Collection of Sacred Art and Biblical Anti quities today, (Thursday) at 2 p.m. In charge of the arrange ments is Mrs. Aaron H. O’Bier, Jr. More than 300 original paint ings of the Old Masters hang in large, individual galleries. Better Homes and Gardens ma gazine has called the paintings “the finest collection of reli gious art in America.” Founded in 1951, the gallery contains representative works of Flemish, Dutch, German, French, Italian, and Spanish painting from the thirteenth through the eighteenth centu ries. Among them are outstand ing examples of Tintoretto, Ti tian, Veronese, Sebastiano del Piombo, Cranach, Gerard Da vid, Murillo, Ribera, Rubens, Van Dyck, Honthorst, and other artists. TO PARTICIPATE IN FIRE X Chief Warrant Officer R. Fra sier Sanders of Newberry, mo tor maintenance officer of the 3rd Battalion, 1W Artillery, South Carolina National Guard, will participate this weekend in “Operation FIRE X”, at Fort Bragg, North Ca^oli a. Operation FIRE X has been termed as ‘ one oi the largest peacetime expenditures of live ammunition ever undertaken in the continental United States”. It is a joint firing exercise and participating will be bat talions of the U. S. Army, U. S. Marine Corp, North Caro lina Army Reserve and South Carolina National Guard. Only two National Guard groups are involved: the 3rd and 4th Howitzer Battalions of the 178th Artillery, 151st Artil lery Group. According to Guard officials, these units were invi ted to participate because of “the professional efficiency and ability exercised..at annual field training in 1970” at Fort Bragg. These are the first National Guard units to be so recognized in recent times, they said. The Guardsmen will be on ac tive duty while participating in the operation. CWO Sanders is a member of Service Battery, 3rd Batta lion of the 178th Artillery. The Battery services the firing units of the 178th Artillery. Students begin teaching chores Three Newberry students are putting aside their college text books this week at Newberry College as they begin their six- week student teaching assign ments. Mrs. Harriette C. Floyd will be teaching math at Newberry High School; Dianne Leopard will be teaching English at New berry High; and Mrs. Mary J. Meeks will be teaching History at Gallman Junior High. They will gradually assume full teaching responsibilities during the six-week program working under the supervision of a classroom teacher and the Department of Education at Newberry College. Eight seniors are participating in the program this fall; ano ther larger group of seniors will wait until the spring semester for their assignments. Mrs. Stutts’ brother dies B. F. Ducker, 62, of Spartan burg, died Wednesday. A native of Anderson County, son of the late J. M. and Evie Lockaby Ducker, he was a Baptist. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Vivian Stutts of Newberry. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Greer at Wood Mortuary.
