D, Wiles, president of Newberry College, with a check for the ten scholarships which the Kendall Company Foun dation awarded to the College. Tributes paid to memory of James D. Brown The following tribute to the Memory of James D. Brown was published in the Congres sional Record by Senator Strom Thurmond: “On August 18, 1970, one of South Carolina’s outstanding and dedicated educators passed away. Mr. James D. Brown was a great South Carolinian, and our State has suffered a loss in his death. In 1948, when I was Governor of South Carolina and ex-officio chairman of the State board of education, James D.. Brown was appointed superintendent of ed ucation for Newberry County’s public schools and served in that position until his retirement in July 1969. We who knew this man and are familiar with his work can praise him as a man devoted to educating our children in i manner that would prepar' them for lead ing useful and productive lives. By his example, Superintendent Brown instilled in those who were privileged to come in con tact with him a deep feeling of civic responsibility and high moral values. “I wish to express my deep est sympathies to Mrs. Lelia Taylor Brown and other mem bers of the family. I shall al ways remember James Brown as a good friend, a dedicated servant of the people, and an outstanding educator. He will always be remembered by his students, associates and friends, and his stimulating influence will continue to be felt in South Carolina. If a man’s worth is to be measured by what he left behind, Superin tendent Browm will be at the head of the list of individuals who left their State and com munity a better place for all to live and work.’’ Mrs. Brown has received a Certificate from President Ri chard M. Nixon. The Certifi cate carries the Presidential Seal and carries the inscrip tion, “The United States of America honors the memory of James D. Brown. This Certifi cate is awarded by a grateful nation in recognition of devoted and selfless consecration to the service of our Country in the Armed Forces of the United States.” The p. . tificate is sign ed by President Nixon. Also paying tribute to the me mory of Mr. Brown was the following, published in the news letter of the S. C. Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Asso ciation: “Whereas, the South Caro lina Tuberculosis and Respira tory Disease Association wish es to pay respect to James D. Brown who has made a dis tinguished and lasting contribu tion to the fight against tuber culosis and other respiratory diseases. Mr. Brown has served over the years in the Newberry County Tuberculosis Associa tion, The Tuberculosis and Health Association of Area Six and the South Carolina Tuber culosis and Respiratory Disease Association. Be it resolved that though this friend will be sorely missed, the honor and esteern in which we hold him shall not be abated by time.” BENEFITS RESIDENTS OF NEWBERRY COUNTY The U. S. Department of A- griculture reports that partici pation in the Food Stamp Pro gram in dewberry County in creased during the month of September. Some families with 833 per sons received $21,176 worth of USDA food coupons. The reci pients spent $5, 482.50 of their own money for the $21,176 worth of food coupons, receiving $15,- 693.50 in coupons free of charge to help increase their food buy ing power. Grocers who have not been diithorized cannot accept food coupons. Any bona fide food re tailer in Newberry County who has not applied, but who is in terested in being authorized to accept the coupons should con tact USDA’s Food and Nutri tion Service at Room 406, Pal metto State Life Building, 1310 Lady Street, Columbia, South Carolina, or call 253-8371 ext. 733. Persons from low income fa milies who feel they may be eligible for assistance under the Food Stamp Program should contact their County Public Wel fare Department at 1328 College Street, Newberry, South Caro lina. DISTRICT 5 TO HAVE RALLY District 5 of the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of South Carolina will hold its annual meeting October 26th at the American Legion Post 20 Home in Greenwood.
