(Sunphoto) Plans made for UF campaign A luncheon meeting and work ing session of the campaign committee of the Newberry County United Fund was held September 25, at the Newberry Inn. Attending the session were members of the campaign com mittee of the United Fund and representatives of the American Red Cross, the Boy Scouts of America, the Girl Scouts of A- merica, Newberry County Re tarded Children, Newberry County Hospital, Newberry County Rescue Squad, New berry County Council on Aging, and Newberry County Mental Health Association, all agencies participating in the United Fund. The meeting was presided over by Jimmie Coggins, cam paign chairman for this years fund drive. Dick Britt, cam paign vice-chairman outlined the campaign organization, em phasizing the necessity of reach ing all citizens of the county to give them the opportunity to contribute to the United Fund. The representatives of the par ticipating agencies were dele gated responsibility for cover ing designated areas of the county during the forthcoming United Fund campaign from October 12th through Novem ber 14th. Errors fata! to Indians Six fumbles and three inter ceptions proved fatal to the Newberry College Indians, as the rival Catawba tribe rolled on for a 41-21 victory. Newberry was first on the scoreboard with seven minutes left in the first quarter on a 42-yard pass play from quarter back Gary Welchel to Johnny Dawkins. The extra point was good and Newberry led 7-0. The lead was short-lived however, as Catawba’s Bill Godgey took the kickoff and rambled 82 yards for a touchdown. Rick Toms added the kick to tie the score. An interference call on Ca tawba's four yard line set up the second Newberry score. Donald Garrick's four yard run and Williamson’s kick put New berry in front again, but for the last time 14-7. A Welchel fumble on his own 20 gave Catawba the break they needed to tie the score again. Fullback Steve Reeder ran for Catawba's second score from the two. Tom's kick was good. The North Carolina Indians crossed the goal two more times in the first half but a 23-yard touchdown pass to Reeder was called back on a clipping charge. Four plays later it was Henry Monokain for the score. Catawba went to the locker room with a 14 point lead. Newberry lost four crucial fumbles in the second half to put the game out of reach for them. Catawba’s Steve Roeder sco red two more touchdowns in the second, one on a two yard run and one on a one yard run, in the second half to Newberry's one. Statistically the teams were pretty well even. Newberry’s total offense was 314 to Cataw ba's 302. Newberry will host Lenoir Rhyne next week in another conference battle at 7:30 p.m. at Setzler Field. The Indians from Newberry have a record of 1-2 (0-1 conf.) to Ca tawba 2-0 (1-0). Mt. Herman homecoming Mount Herman Lutheran Church, Peak, will observe its annual Homecoming Service at 11:00 a.m. on October 4. Pastor Joseph Sam Wessinger, a form er supply pastor of Mt. Herman, will be the guest speaker. Pastor Wessinger was born three miles south of Chapin. He graduated from Lexington High School and Clemson Uni versity before completing his seminary training at Mt. Plea sant, South Carolina, in 1911. The same year he married Jes sie Oxner from Saluda County. During the years. Pastor Wes singer has faithfully served many parishes. These include the following: Summer Memo rial and Mayer Memorial in Newberry, St. Peter’s and St. Thomas, Chapin, and Mt. Tabor and Mt. Pilgrim, Little Moun tain. Reverend Smith and the Church Council invite former members and friends of the congregation to join them for this Homecoming Service and the picnic which will be held at the Peak Community Center following the Service.
