O aI ! 1 lio V A a H A long parade with marching bands and beauty queens will highlight activities of Fire Pre vention Week, sponsored by the ■ maty Firemen's Association and the Fxchange Club, next week. While fire prevention will he stressed m v a r i o u s ways throughout the week, the main events will occur on Fire Pre vention Day. Tuesday. October tith The Fire Prevention Parade, which grows m size and inte rest each year, will begin Tuesday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. Between 80 and 100 units are expected to take part, accord ing to Captain Tutfy Milstead, chairman of the 1 observance. In addition to the usual fire fighting units from throughout the county, there will be a num ber of pieces of old fire equip ment in the parade and on dis- plav at the Fire House during Fire Frevention Week Many of the county's beauties wall ride in the parade, and from among them one will he chosen "Miss Fire Prevention" to succeed the 1909 queen ,Lynn Bedenbaugh At least five bands will he on hand to provide music for the occasion The Army Band from Fort Jackson: the Newberry College Marching Band: New- bet rv High School. School and Mid-Carolina High School hands will be seen otid heard Miss Fne Prevention" will o» t a ow ned iin I lie steps of the County property values increase over $1 million Assessed valuation of proper ty in Newberry increased by $1,134,640 and income in tax revenues for the county increa sed $78,305.16, over the 1969 fi gures, according to County Au ditor Mrs. Jeannette Hamm. The figures were compiled by the Auditor's office during the past month, and tax notices were put in the mail Tuesday night. J. Ray Dawkins, County Treasurer, said that taxpayers would receive a one percent discount if the taxes are paid during the month of October. After that time, there will be no discount, and a penalty will he placed on taxes unpaid at the end of the year. Mr. Daw r - kins said. Total assessed valuation for 1970 is $16,518,930, compared to $15,384,290 for 1969. Taxwise, the County expects to collect this year $1,145,270.17; last year the tax hill was $1,066,965.01. The increase occurred in both real and personal property. Real estate valuation increas ed from $7,765,550 in 1969 to $8,029,910 in 1970. The Newberry office of Civil Defense announces that the quarterly civil defense alert— the sounding of the sirens— will be next Wednesday, Octo ber 7 at 1TX) p.m. Commissioners decide to lease property By a two-to-one vote, the New berry County Board of Commis sioners has agreed to lease the property adjacent to the court house, beside the Wiseman Ho tel building, to the City for pur poses of creating a parking lot. il. B. Hendrix. Supervisor, se conded the motion made by Commissioner Ben Dawkins, and the two voted in favor of the motion to lease the land. Commissioner Curtis Sheaiy vo ted against the motion. At a meeting in August, the Commission had voted not to convey, or deed, the property to the City.
