C., Thursday, Sept. 17, 1970—PAGE 6 St. Phillip’s Lutheran Church Organized Ninety Years Ago In August of 1881 a Lutheran Congregation called St. Phillip’s was organized. This new con gregation first worshipped in Captain Philip Sligh’s yard. Around the first of September in that same year, the St. Phil lip’s Congregation began their first church building near the seventh mile stone on the road leading from Newberry to Hugh ey’s ferry on Broad River. Mr. Romeo Halfacre built the church with the exception of the ceil ing and the walls. The congre gation then numbered about 30. • Serving St. Phillip’s as its first officers were Rev. H. L. Wingard, Pastor; Adam Kibler, W. G. Metts, and G. L. Sease, Elders; Melvin Dickert, Mon roe M. Dickert, and Melvin Wicker, deacons. The first sermon was preach ed in the church on November 6, 1881. The Church was com pleted on November 5, 1882. Pastors and Supply pastors from 1881-1900, Rev. H. L. Win gard, Rev. S. T. Hallman, Prof essor J. B. Fox, Rev. John H. Wyse, Rev. J. A. Sligh, and the Rev. J. D. Bowler. On July 6, 1888 John M. Kin- ard granted to St. Phillip’s Lu theran Church, a charter en abling the congregation to func tion as a corporation under the laws of the State of South Car olina. In October of 1900 a new pas torate was organized. This pas torate consisted of St. Phillip’s Bachman Chapel, and Mt. Oli vet. Dr. S. T. Hallman accepted a call to St. Phillip’s, thus returning to again serve St. Phillip’s as Pastor. From February 1901 to Octo ber 1910, St. Phillip’s and Bach man Chapel were one parish. They had for their pastors: Rev. H. P. Counts, Rev. J. C. Wes- singer, Rev. H. H. E. Derrick, and Rev. J. J. Long. In 1910 a new pastorate was formed consisting of St. Phil lip’s, St. Paul’s and Bachman Chapel. Serving this pastorate were Rev. J. A. Sligh as pastor and Rev. Y. Von A. Riser as assistant. Reverend Riser be came the regular pastor upon the retirement of Rev. Sligh. During Rev. Riser’s term as pastor, the St. Phillip’s Congre gation erected a new church building in place of the old building which they removed. This church was built in 1914 and served the congregation un til July 1, 1962, when St. Phil lip’s moved across the road to their present church building. Serving these three churches from 1910 to 1948 were Rev. J. A. Sligh, Rev. Y. Von A. Riser, Rev. S. P. Koon, Rev. Glenn S. Eckard, Rev. J. A. Keisler, Jr., Rev. J. Emmett Roof. In 1948, St. Phillip’s Congre gation had become a parish of its own, at the close of Rev. J. Emmett Roof’s term as pas tor. The St. Phillip’s congrega tion now had a pastor all its own. From the beginning of Rev. Stucke’s pastorate in 1948, the St. Phillip’s church made a great deal of progress. In the year of 1948, the present par sonage was built, having been completed in October of that year and made debt free by the end of the year. This par sonage is still used by the past or of our congregation today. Serving St. Phillip’s 1948-52 was Rev. C. H. Stucke. During the ministry of Clar ence L. Richardson, St. Phil lips moved ahead to bigger goals. In July 1, 1962, St. Phil lips Lutheran Church dedicated its present building to the glory of God. Pastors from 1952-68, Rever end Clarence L. Richardson and Rev. Carroll Robinson. St. Phillip’s Lutheran Church is today moving forward in serving God’s people in the St. Phillip’s area under the leader ship of Rev. Clarence G. Walck, Jr. Pastor Walck was bom in Eckley, Pennsylvania, graduat ed from Watsontown High school and Lenoir Rhyne College, Hick ory, N. C.; Lutheran Theologi cal Southern Seminary, Colum bia, S. C. He has served par ishes in Hallandale, Florida and Somerset, Pa. before coming to St. Phillip’s. In the St. Phillip’s Church, as in every Christian Church, the guiding hand of Almighty God has ever been seen. St. Phil lip’s congregation gives humble thanks to Him for having led us during the past 89 years and asks Him to guide and direct us in the future to serve St. Phillip’s Community and New berry County. Bom in Newberry County, son of the late Joe M. and Fannie Bobb Coppock, he was a mem ber of Ebenezer Methodist Church and a contractor. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Etta Auton Coppock; three sons, Steve S. Coppock of Co lumbia, Olin J. Coppock of New berry and Richard Wayne Cop pock of the U.S. Army, Viet nam; a daughter, Mrs. Gail Doolittle of Greenwood; two sis ters, Mrs. Beulah Mae Shealy and Mrs. Marie C. Jones of Newberry; and two grandchil dren. Funeral services were held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at McSwain Funeral Home. Burial was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
