(News-Citizen Photo) James Masters rites Wednesday James Masters, 75, of 2122 Harper St., died Sunday night at the Newberry County Memor ial Hospital. Mr. Masters was bom in Lau rens County, the son of the late Julius and Mary Masters. He was a retired employee of the Oakland Plant of Kendall Co. and a member of Lewis Meth odist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Louise Brooks Masters; one son, James L. Masters of Newberry; one sister, Mrs. Mattie Jane Ballard of Ninety Six; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were con ducted Wednesday at the Whi taker Funeral Home by Rev. Howard Wright. Burial was in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Charles Stevens dies Wednesday Charles E. Stevens, 43, died suddenly Wednesday at the Newberry County Memorial Hos pital. Mr. Stevens was born in New berry County, the son of Mrs. Bertha Schumpert Stevens May er of Newberry and the late Lance Stevens. He was employ ed as Sectionman in the Spin ning Room of Newberry Mills. He was a member of Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church. Besides his mother, he is sur vived by his wife, Mrs. Virginia Berry Stevens; two sons, Larry Stevens and Ronnie Stevens; two brothers, Earl Stevens and William Stevens; and one sister, Mrs. Shirley Livingston, all of Newberry. Funeral services were con ducted Thursday at Mayer Me morial Lutheran Church by Rev. John H. Koch Jr. and Rev. Wil liam H. Sorrow. Burial was in the Springdale Section of Rose- mont Cemetery. JIMMIE CLARK OF JOHNSTON DIES Jimmie D. Clark, 66, of John ston, died Tuesday of last week. Among his survivors is a son, Mike Edward Clark of Chap pells. Funeral services were held Wednesday in Johnston. WINTHROP STUDENTS EXEMPT COURSES Among the 51 freshmen stu dents at Winthrop College who exempted courses for the fall semester were Debbie Partain of Newberry and Anne Long of Silverstreet, both of whom exempted three hours of Spa nish 101. Food Stamp use on increase The U. S. Department of A- griculture reports that partici pation in the Food Stamp Pro gram in Newberry County in creased during the month of August. Some 310 families with 779 persons received $19,837 worth of USD A food coupons. The re cipients spent $5,278.50 of their own money for the $19,837 worth of food coupons, receiv ing $14,558.50 in coupons free of charge to help increase their food buying power. Grocers who have not been authorized cannot accept food coupons. Any bona fide food re tailer in Newberry County who has not applied, but who is in terested in being authorized to accept the coupons should con tact USDA’s Food and Nutri tion Service at Room 406, Pal metto State Life Building, 1310 Lady Street, Columbia, S. C. Persons from low-income fa milies who feel they may be eligible for assistance under the Food Stamp Program should contact their County Public Wel fare Department at 1328 College Street, Newberry. Headspring cow gets award A Triple Ton of Gold Certi ficate has been awarded a re gistered Jersey cow owned by Headspring Farm, Newberry. The award went to the cow, Headspring Sparkling Paula, which produced 6,407 lbs. butter- fat—more than three tons—from 119,287 lbs. milk in 11 consecu tive years. The certificate was presented by The American Jer sey Cattle Club from its head quarters in Columbus, Ohio. The production of Headspring Sparkling Paula during her offi cial test period far exceeds that of the average dairy cow in the United States. All tests were checked both by Clemson Uni versity and The American Jer sey Cattle Club. The Triple Ton of Gold award aids Jersey breeders in select ing cows with consistently high production over a long period.
