C., Thursday, Aug. 27, 1970 BOOK ON SALE “Saluda County in Scene and Story”, a book concerning the Saluda County area from pre- Colonial days until 1970, has been published in a 140-page Tricentennial Edition. The book contains about for ty pictures of historical inte rest. The cost is $2.08, or $2.25 by mail and may be picked up or ordered at the office of Coun ty Treasurer Sydney B. Hare in the Saluda County Courthouse. The book is also on sale at a number of stores in Saluda, Ridge Spring and Ward. Proceeds will be used to pay for printing, but if there is any surplus, it will be used as de termined later for some worthy purpose, such as for a perma nent museum, according to Motte J. Yarbrough of the Sa luda County Committee on His tory and Research. RECREATION ROUND-UP Registration is now underway at the Speer Street Youth Cent er for girls 9—12 years of age that would like to participate in cheerleading. This year the girls will be di vided into dfiferent age groups and assigned to a particular football team. Each Cheerlead ing Squad will remain with this team for the entire season. . Yells and cheers will be pro vided for the participants as well as supervision for games and practices until game itme. Plans are being made at the present time for the cheerlead ers to visit the communities in the Newberry area to cheer for their team during the football season. For further information con cerning cheerleading, call the recreation department at 276— 4856. Midget League Football regis tration is presently underway at the Speer Street Youth Center. All boys who plan to play this year must have a physical ex amination by a doctor. Dr. Long will be at the Speer Street Youth Center Thursday, Sept. 3 at 3:30 for all boys who have not had a physical. Boys 9—12 years of age will be participating in this league this year. The recreation depart ment is expecting to have seve ral new teams this year. Plans are being made to play out-of- town teams in the Newberry area. All boys who are members of the Newberry Recreation Mid get League will have an oppor tunity to take a trip to Atlanta, spend the night and watch an Atlanta Falcon Football game. Additional information con cerning Midget football may be obtained by calling the Recrea tion Department at 276—4856. Adult archery has started at the Newberry Recreation De partment and will meet every Thursday night at 7:00 until 10:00. The Speer Street Youth Center will afford the participants a good indoor range with plenty of distance to keep the eye sharp. This club is for all interested persons, hunters or non-hunters. It is not necessary to have ar chery tackle at the present time as there will be extra tackle at the center. There is no cost to become a member.
