Recreation Day events are told Friday, August 7, Recreation Day will begin at 9 a.m. at the Speers Street Ball Field. There will be approximately 20 different events for youths up through 14 years of age to participate. Treasure Hunt will be one of the exciting events which will lead the participants to the lost treasure. Fire Chief Ed Hazel will help the Recreation Department with a tug-o-war and the losers will get a good soaking from water from the fire trucK. Little Miss Recreation Beauty Contest for girls 4, 5 and 6 years of age will take place on the pool deck of the Margaret Hunt er Pool. The Little Miss Re creation Contest will start at 2:30 p.m. The 50 yard dash and the 100 yard dash along with the run ning broad jump will be added extras this year in the competi tion. Bicycle Race will be a special event set up for youngsters to test their skills and speed. All participants in this activity will furnish their own bicycles. Hot dogs and cokes will be sold during the day for the total price of 15 cents. Snowballs will be free. Pet Show will also take place during the afternoon starting at 1 p.m Other activities for the day will include: sack races, three legged races, the fore par, horse shoe. Hula Hoop, and frisbee championships. Also the wheel barrow race, swimming events and the free swim will round out an exciting day of Recreat ion Dav activities. Plans final for fishing rodeo All the plans have been made and all tackle is ready at the Newberry Recreation Depart ment for the first annual Fishing Rodeo. All youngsters up to the seventh grade level will be par ticipating for the prizes that will be awarded for the first fish caught, the biggest bream, bass, and catfish and the most fish caught between the hours of 10 a. m. and 12 noon. Also receiv ing prizes will be the oldest woman and man that attends the rodeo. The Newberry County Rescue Squad will be present to help and aid in conducting of the rodeo. The contest will take place at the J. W. (Bill) Ringer. Jr. fish pond. The pond is located off Highway 76 behind Summers Drive-In. There will be a sign to show the correct road to the pond. There is no restriction on fishing tackle as each partici pant will furnish his or her own supplies. Persons wishing to attend the rodeo may ride the bus if they do not have transportation. The bus will leave the Speers Street Youth Center at 9:00 and 9:30. In the event of rain the rodeo will be re-scheduled at a later date. Further questions about the rodeo may be answered by call ing the recreation department at 276-4856. Candidates for B. S. degrees are Donald C. Seymour, son of Mrs. E. L. Seymour, 1401 Third Street; Kenneth Ray Waites and Steven Edward Waites, sons of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Waites of Route 1. TEE AND SWING WINNERS NAMED Approximately 65 boys were present at the Oakland Ball Field Thursday to participate in the baseball events. The boys participated in four different events. Participants of the pro gram were divided into age groups and participated in the following events: Hitting: Each boy had three chances to hit a baseball from a tee to see who could hit the ball the greatest distance. Accuracy Throw: Each young ster had three pitches to hit a target. Distance Throw: Two chances were given to each participant in this event to see who had the strongest arm. Base running: Each boy had an opportunity to run the bases and was timed to see who could get around the bases the quick est. Winners, 6 year olds, Benji Nichols made a clean sweep in this age group as he won all four events. Seven year olds: Tommy Ni chols, hitting; Jamie Peak, ac curacy throw; Timmy Traylor, base running; Kemper Fuller, distance throw. Eight year olds: Lynn Reese, accuracy throw; Johnny Ham mond, hitting; Phil Burley, dis tance throw; Bill Hawkins, base running. Nine year olds: Alvin Ringer, distance and accuracy throw; Mark Lever, base running; Billy Wulfgan, hitting. Ten, eleven and twelve year olds: Jammy Wilson, base run ning; Curtis Lever, distance and accuracy throw, and batting. The winners of these events were given free swim passes to the pool for the remainder of the swimming season. Marriages James Robert Bouknight of Newberry and Linda Joanne Derrick of Columbia were mar ried in Columbia July 3. Furman Rufus DeLoach and Joye Elaine Robertson of New berry were married here July 11 by Probate Judge Frank H. Ward. City Building Permits Drayton L. County students to get degrees Eight Newberry County stu dents at Newberry College are candidates for their baccalaur eate degrees at the College’s summer graduating exercises on Friday, August 21. They are among the 30 sen iors who either finishished their undergraduate careers at the end of the first summer term on July 15 or who are expected to complete them August 21. The local candidates are: Thomas C. Dillard, 1224 Kin- ard St.; Sheryl Waters Mishoe, Route 3; James Alonzo Sand ers, 1611 Hutto Ave.; Michael W.
