Stanford, husband of the former Miss Barbara Long of Silverstreet, is attending the final phase of naval aviator training at Train ing Squadron-27. Naval A i r Station, Corpus Christi, Texas. The five-month training per iod will include 140 hours of flight time in the “Tracker” aircraft, work toward his all- weather flight rating and quali fication as a carrier pilot. VIETNAM — Army Sergeant John E. Bowers of Route 1, Little Mountain, recently re ceived the Army Commendation Medal while serving with the 4th Infantry Division near An Khe, Vietnam. Sgt. Bowers earned the award for meritorious service as a squad leader with Company D, 2d Battalion of the division’s 35th Infantry. RECENT MOVINGS Mr. and Mrs. Claude B. Shaw are making their home at 2908 Hunt Street. Mr. and Mrs. Vernon L. Koon, Jr. have moved to 698 Pope Street to make their home. Boozer, 68, of Rt. 4, Newberry died Saturday after noon at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital. He had been in declining health for more than a year. Born and reared in Newberry County, he was the son of the late William D. and Carrie Wil lingham Boozer. He was a mem ber of Summer Memorial Luth eran Church and was a retired employee of the Mollohon Plant of Kendall Co. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Margaret Hawkins Boozer, New berry; three brothers, Ray Booz er, Clinton, W. L. Boozer, Inman and Granville Boozer, Newber ry; two sisters, Mrs. Abram Warren, Newberry, Mrs. Sam Pat Bowers, Clinton, and a num ber of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 6 o’clock from Summer Memorial Luth eran Church with Rev. J. Pierce Evans conducting the service. Interment was in Newberry Me morial Gardens. Joseph Webb died Monday Joseph Duncan Wells, 61, of Chappells, died Monday. He was born in Chappells, son of the late Brooks and Lilly Hol land Webb. He w r as a Baptist and was employed by Duke Power Co. at the Buzzard Roost Plant. Surviving are a brother, Bel ton Webb of Atlanta, Ga.; and a sister, Mrs. J. H. Childs of St. Petersburg, Fla. Graveside services were held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Chest nut Hill Baptist Church Ceme tery. HERBERT E. BOUKNIGHT DIES IN COLUMBIA Herbert E. Bouknight, 68, of Columbia died Thursday at his home. He was born in Newberry, a son of the late Perry E. and Bessie Bouknight. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Mr. Bouknight was twice mar ried, first to the late Lillie Mae Smith and then to the late Hel- ei Harbort Bouknight. Ollie Lever died Saturday Ollie Cole Lever, 56, died late Saturday afternoon at the New berry County Memorial Hospi tal, after several years of de clining health. Born and reared in Lexington County near Chapin, he was the son of Mrs. Martha Willingham Lever and the late F. Dewitt Lever. He was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church, a retired employee of the Kendall Co., and a member of the Oak land Retirees Club. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Margie Boggs Lever, Newberry; three daughters, Mrs. H. S. (Joyce) Bedenbaugh of Newber ry, Mrs. H. M. (Patsy) Lollis Jr., Clinton, and Mrs. L. R. (Brenda) Hubbard, Newberry; his mother, Mrs. Martha W. Le ver, Newberry; four brothers, Vernon Lever, Jersey City, N. J., Carlyle Lever, Florence, Claude Lever, North Augusta and Ellis Lever, Alexandria, Va.; four sisters, Mrs I. H. Webb, Mrs. Walter Martin, both of Greenwood, Mrs. Bobby Hall, Clinton, and Mrs. Roy Blanton, Newberry, and nine grandchild ren. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 5 o’clock from the Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. William Sor row and Rev. Robert Bagwell conducting the service. Inter ment was in Newberry Memor ial Gardens. John W. Wilson rites Friday John William (Preach) Wil son, 56, died Thursday morning at the Newberry County Memor ial Hospital after several years of declining health. He was born and reared in Newberry County and was the son of Mrs. Louise Senn Wilson and the late John William Wil son Sr. He was a member of Smyrna Presbyterian Church and was a retired farmer. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Louise Senn Wilson, Silver- street; one son, Barry Laverne Wilson, Columbia; one daugh ter, Miss Diane Wilson, Colum bia; a number of uncles and aunts. Funeral was held Friday at 2:30 p.m. from Smyrna Pres byterian Church with Rev. Charles Gahagan conducting the service. Burial was in the church cemetery. HAVE A WONDERFUL TRIP “YOUR PRIVATE BANKERS” 1418 Main Street Phone 276-1422 Summer Memorial Lutheran Church came into existence on Sunday, July 24, 1910, with the temporary name of Mollohon Lutheran Church. The Rever end P. E. Shealy, the mission developer, called a meeting af ter the worship service on said Sunday and the church was or ganized with 26 charter mem bers. Pastor Shealy became the first pastor. Application was made October 23, 1910 for membership into the Evangelical Synod of South Carolina. At the time there were 40 confirmed members. The name Summer Memorial Evan gelical Lutheran Church had been chosen. The first church building, a white frame building, was erect ed in 1911 with funds given by C. E„ J. H., and G. W. Sum mer in memory of their par ents, George W. and Martha D. Summer. The church was re modeled in 1939, adding two tow ers and several feet to the front of the building. By the late 40’s or early 50’s, it became evident that a new and larger building with more Sunday Church school room was needed. So in 1952 a brick church with Sunday church school rooms in the basement was built. By the end of 1953, the church building was dedi cated debt free. In 1966 the need for more Sunday Church School space was seen.Land >;ext to the church w’as purenased for future expansion and a building fund for a new educational building started. Between the years 1910 and 1957, Summer Memorial was a part of a multi-church parish. There were three different chur ches in the parish at one time or the other during these years. Summer Memorial and Mayer Memorial 1910-1929; Corinth Lu theran Church, Saluda joined the parish from 1930-1937U). Synod minutes show that these churches were served by the same minister during the yeais mentioned. Then in 1937(?) the Kendall Parish, comprised of Summer Memorial and Bethany Lutheran Churches, w'as form ed. This union lasted until 1957 when the parish was dissolved and Summer Memorial took on the task of supporting its own pastor. Summer Memorial pur chased Bethany’s share of the parsonage for its use. Two sons of Summer Memor ial, George Bennet Shealy and Alvin Fulmer, have entered the ministry of the Lutheran church. Summer Memorial has been served by 15 pastors during its 60 years of ministry to the peo ple of the Mollohon community. Rev. P. E. Shealy, developer, 1910- 1911; Rev. J. B. Harmon, 1911- 1912 Rev. E.
