is promoted
Dr. John Bedenbaugh has
been appointed Chairman of the
Chemistry Department at the
University of Southern Missis
sippi, Hattiesburg, effective July
1. He fills the vacancy left by
Dr. R. T. Van Aller’s recent ap
pointment as Dean of the Col
lege of Sciences. The new
chairman has served as Asso
ciate Professor of Chemistry at
USM since 1966.

Bedenbaugh is a member of
Chi Beta Phi Science Frater
nity, Alpha Chi Sigma Chemis
try Fraternity, Phi Lambda Up-
silon National Honor Fraternity

al Honor Fraternity, and was
recently elected to honorary
membership in Alpha Epsilon
Delta International Premedical
Honor Society.
Dr. Bedenbaugh contributes
professionally to the various
journals of chemistry and has
also contributed to Index Chem-
icus, the international journal
of chemistry. He has been co
author of three publications and
has presented papers at a num
ber of professional meetings.
Dr. Bedenbaugh has four stu
dents doing research for their
Ph. D. degrees undei his dir
ection. His wife, Angela, who is
a Research Assistant in the
department, co*directs these stu
dents with him.
He served as one of three
panel members at the Central
Section meeting of the Ameri
can Chemical Society in Col
umbus, Ohio in June 1970 and
has been asked to be Chair
man of a section of the South
east-Southwest regional meeting
of the American Chemical So
ciety in New Orleans in De
cember.
A native of Newberry, Dr.
Bedenbaugh is the son of Mrs.
Grace H. Bedenbaugh, now of
Timmonsville. He earned his
B. S. degree at Newberry Col
lege, his M. A. degree at the
University of North Carolina,
and his Ph. D. degree from the
University of Texas. His major
professional interest is Labora
tory Safety and lists hobbies as
photography, reading and mass
media communications.
Last swim class
start August 3
Monday, August 3 will begin
the last session for swimming
lessons this summer. Classes to
be offered will be Beginner, Ad
vanced Beginner, Intermdiate,
Pre-School and Adult Beginner.
Pre-registration is now going
on at the pool. Interested per
sons may sign up by going by
the Margaret Hunter Pool or by
calling 276-2992. All Youth swim
mers will be tested and assigned
to a class Monday, August 3
at 11 a.m. The adult classes will
be held at night beginning the
same date from 6 until 7 p.m.
Red Cross Certificates will be
issued to the participants that
pass the necessary require
ments. There will be a charge
of $5 for 12 year olds and under
and $7 for 13 and over for the
use of the pool.
