In addition to the lowered ceiling, the remodeling and redecorating plans call for new light fixtures and drapes and the painting of the dining room walls. Highway death toll slowing The collective efforts of high way officials in the realm of safety seem to be paying off, resulting in a slackening of the highway death toll. The Traffic Records office of the Highway Department re ports that the margin between the number of highway deaths for 1969 and those for 1970 has been slowly narrowing in the past five weeks. As of midnight July 15, the number of highway deaths for 1970 was 535 which is 24 more than the 511 reported during the same period last year. This is the smallest dif ference shown since February, and highway officials say that they are keeping their fingers crossed that this trend will con tinue. Since the 1st of April when the 1970 total was 62 more than the toll for the same period in 1969, the state’s traffic fatalities have apparently stabilized. This could mean that the many facet ed safety program of the High way Department is beginning to bear fruit. Programs such as vehicle inspection, the strength ening of driver examination, sel ective enforcement by the high way patrol at high accident lo cations, the accelerated speed law enforcement through the use of radar as well as the rela tively new implied consent law which is designed to remove drunk drivers from the state’s streets and highways all go to gether to boost highway safety efforts. Safety officials recognize that there will be an elapse of time before specialized efforts such as the ones mentioned above begin to show significant im pact. The Department’s Traffic Re cord System and its specialized investigative teams which study each fatal accident have been pointing out trouble spots to of ficials and numerous highway engineering and maintenance improvements have been made. One safety official said, “I be lieve it is also particularly sig nificant that engineering and maintenance studies have led to additional safety features being incorporated into the state’s highway system.” “We’re hoping that the slow down in the traffic death figures means we’re on the right track and that South Carolina high ways are becoming safer for motorists,” he said. While crediting the public with safer driving habits, the offi cial warned motorists not to re lax their safety vigil. “July and August are high traffic months and have been traditionally high fatality months.
