The West End Baptist Church l° r
was organized on April 10, 1887, In 1899, with approximately

facilities and appointed a build
ing committee to study plans
which would be more suitable
for present and future needs.
Plans were made and a loan
was secured, and on May 30,
1954, the last service was held
in the old building before it was
torn down to be replaced by the
new church. Work was begun in
June, 1954. During the eight
months in which the new build
ing was under construction, the
congregation held services in
the West End Grammar school.
Through the years of its ex
istence, many of its members
have rendered lengthy and dedi
cated service in the Kingdom of
God. One of the young men of
the church, Donald E. Cook,
was called into the Gospel min
istry and was ordained by the
church in 1954. He is now serv
ing as Associate Professor of
New Testament at Southeastern
Baptist Theological Seminary,
Wake Forest, N. C.
Through the years twenty-nine

Music Building
underway
“Groundbreaking ceremonies
for the new $50,000 music build
ing at Newberry College will be
hopefully scheduled in Novem
ber,” Dr. A.G.D. Wiles, presi
dent of the College, announced.
The Board of Trustees gave
the green light for the archi
tect to proceed with the detailed
drawings of the new structure
at its May meeting.
“This means,” Dr. Wiles con
tinued, “that we should be able
to advertise for bids in Octo
ber and break ground for the
much needed facility before the
cold weather sets in.”
The music unit will be built
on the west side of College Street
opposite Wiles Chapel. The bas
ic construction pattern calls for
four connected hexagonal sect
ions containing a recital hall,
a band room, studios, practice
rooms and faculty offices.
The College’s Alumni Asso
ciation has been conducting a
campaign lor music building
funds since 1964, and has raised
over $200,000. The new structure
is also a primary objective of
the College’s 1969 Second Cen
tury Campaign.
The present home of the Mus
ic Department was built in
1907 although the musicians
have used it only since 1950.
The building was originally us
ed as the home for the president
of the College, but it has also
been used for a dining hall and
for faculty housing.
