Newberry Lumber Co. scored two runs in the bottom
of the seventh inning to defeat season Champs Kendall
Co. for the play-off championship in the men's Soft Ball
league. Winning pitcher for Newberry Lumber Co. was

Lt. Col. Owens
service today
Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Albert D.
Owens, 48, died Sunday at the
U. S. Air Force Medical Center,
Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi,
Miss, where he had been since
January 3.
Chaplain Owens began his
military career in 1940, his last
assignment being with the 3rd
Airborne Division, Robin Air
Force Base.
He was bom in Newberry,
the son of the late George Rob
ert Owens and Mrs. Inez Owens
McCarey. He was graduated
from Newberry College and the
Lutheran Theological Seminary
in Columbia, and received his
master’s degree from the Uni
versity of South Carolina. He
served pastorates in Summit,
Spartanburg and West Colum
bia.
After entering service in the
Air Force, he served in Korea
and Turkey. While in Ankara,
Turkey, he was awarded the
Airman’s Medal for heroism in
volving voluntary risk of life.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Mary Livingston Owens;
two daughters, Miss Faith
Owens and Miss Aleesa Owens,
both of Newberry; one brother,
George Robert Owens, Jr. and
one sister, Mrs. Broadus Lips
comb, both of Newberry; and
his stepfather, J. 0. McCarey
of Newberry.
Funeral services will be con
ducted at 4 p.m. today (Thurs
day) at Colony Lutheran Church
by the Rev. J. Virgil Long and
Chapain (Major) Lee Gard. In
terment will be in the church
cemetery with full military
rites.
Jesse J. Guin
dies Saturday
Jesse J. Guin, 77, of 1329 Hunt
Street, died late Saturday after
noon after a lingering illness.
Mr. Guin was born in Laur
ens County and was the son of
the late Brooks M. and Elisa
Britt Guin. He was a member
of Central Methodist Church; a
veteran of World War I; a mem
ber of Anacostia Masonic Lodge
No. 21, Washington, D. C. Prior
to his retirement he operated a
business in Washington and in
Newberry.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Louise Routh Guin, Newberry;
one son, Jesse J. Guin, Jr., Phil
adelphia, Pa.; three brothers,
Lindsey L. Guin, Newberry;
Wilbur Guin, Columbia; Brooks
Guin, Chicago; and two grand
children.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock
from the McSwain Funeral
Home with Rev. James Mar
tin conducting. Interment follow
ed in Newberry Memorial Gar
dens.
