physics grant
Newoerry College is one of
20 colleges and universities in
the Carolinas and Virginia shar
ing in a $147,800 grant from the
National Science Foundation de
signed to assist the colleges to
improve and revitalize under
graduate physics programs. Kib-
ler Williamson, professor of
physics at Newberry College, is
the local project coordinator.
Each of the participating col
leges will receive a matching
grant of up to $1,000 for the
purchase of laboratory equip
ment. The federal grant was
made to the Regional Educa
tional Laboratory for the Caro
linas and Virginia (RELCV),
to finance the second year of
the three-year project. The first
year of the project, which ends
August 31, is being supported
by a $132,316 federal grant. The
project is a cooperative ven
ture between RELCV, the Uni
versity of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill, and the member
schools.
Williamson is one of 19 col
lege and university physics
teachers attending a six-week
summer institute at the Chapel
Hill school. The institute pro
gram includes regular courses
in science, two seminars each
week, field trips, and guest lec
turers. Part of the summer pro
gram is devoted to examining
and testing 36 low-cost experi
ments which illustrate basic
principles normally included in
an introductory college physics
course.
Other South Carolina colleges
participating in the program in
clude the College of Charleston,
Furman University and South
Carolina State.

Larry Wesley Smith of Prosperity became pastor of
Mt. Hermon and Mt. Olivet Lutheran Churches in Peak
and Chapin on June 1, 1970. He is a 1966 graduate of
Newberry College with a B.A. Degree and received his
Master of Divinity Degree from the Lutheran Theological
Southern Seminary in Columbia, South Carolina, on May
29, 1970.
He is married to the former Deree Abrams of Newber
ry. They have one son Larry Warren, nine months old.
