This is the same altar that gave much moral and Spiritual sup port to our men in service dur ing World War Two. Hundreds of men received the Holy Sac rament of the Lord’s Supper at this altar. In 1954, Rev. Noah Yount be gan his ministry to the congre gation. His ministry lasted for ten years until his retirement in 1964. (Rev. Yount still min isters to congregations in N.C. although he is now 80 years of age.) On June 14, 1964, the congregation joyfully cele brated the anniversary of the twenty-fifth year of her minis try since organization in 1939. The message for the special service was preached by Rev. Garth Hill, Dean of the New berry District at that time. Tragedy touched the hearts of the congregation on July 30, 1959, when a young college stu dent named Alton Jeff Sum mers was killed in an automo bile accident. This young man, a student at Newberry College, was planning to enter the min istry after graduation. In June 1967, after three years of being without a fulltime pas tor, Rev. Rubber Stamps Made at THE SUN Office inary student, accepted a call to become pastor of St. Timothy and Augsburg Lutheran chur ches. During these three years, the congregation was minister ed to by seminary students and by Rev. Harry Weber, a pro fessor at Newberry College. Pastor Weber, because of his unselfish service to the congre gation, will always have a spec ial place in the congregation’s heart. Other Pastors and Sem inary students who have meant a lot to the congregation during vacancies include Rev. A. W. Ballentine, Rev. George B. Shealy, and Rev. F. Lavaugn Keisler. Memorable events during Pas tor Riddle’s ministry include: June 9, 1968 when Mrs. J. B. Baker (“Aiint Dosia”), a char ter member and the oldest member (now deceased) was honored at the homecoming ser vice. On January 12, 1969, chimes to the organ of the church were given and dedicat ed to the glory of God and in memory of Mrs. Elizabeth P. Kinard by her husband, B. S. Kinard. This meant much to the congregation since Mrs. Kinard had given much time to St. Timothy playing the organ for worship services. Then on May 17, 1970, St. Timothy held her first confirmation service since 1964. The five members included Betty Kinard, Dickert Lominick, Libby Lominick, Gin- ny Lominick and Beth McCul lough. As stated in the beginning, this history of this congregation is built around a love for Christ, service to the community and hard work. This congregation enjoys fellowship. . .the fellow ship of a congregational meal; the fellowship of the men amid the noise of hammers and elec tric saws while doing work around the church building or parsonage; the fellowship of the women as they make their own set of altar paraments or Chris- mons for the tree that beautifies our Christmas worship services. It includes the voices and laugh ter of her young people as they make kits to send our men in service in Vietnam. It includes the hands of love and compas sion extended by her members in time of death and illness. St. Timothy is a congregation whose members give unselfishly of their time to the community. One member, Robert Baker, Sr. is serving his third term as mayor of Whitmire. J. L. Hart man, Herman Lominick, Sr. and Ray Lominick serve on the Whitmire volunteer fire depart ment. Herman Lominick, Sr., David McCullough, and James Baker work with the local Res cue Squad. Other members serve in various ministries in the community also. Four young men are currently serving their country in military service. They are Harold Gilliam, Her man Robert Lominick, Jr., Rob ert Baker, Jr. and Arthur Well ing. In the congregation’s minis try, H. B. McKain has served many years as church treasur er. Ray Lominick is Building Fund treasurer, a ministry held by the late Furman Dickert for many years before his death last year. The pastors of St. Timothy include Rev. Raymond Ellsworth, 1939-1944; Rev. Wil liam Fritz, 1944-47; Rev. G.H.C. Park, 1947-53; Rev. Noah Yount, 1954-64; and Rev.Ralph Riddle, 1967-present.
