have received on the current
series of church histories which
are being published in connect
ion with the Newberry County
observance of the S C Tricen
tennial
I hope all of you will take
time to read these histories.
They were furnished by each
individual church and we also
would thank those responsible
for getting them to us. I have
found all of them to be quite
interesting. One reader tells me
that she intends to clip each
one to make a scrapbook for
future reference.
The histories may not be pub
lished in the order in which
they are submitted, but sooner
or later, during the time be
tween now and November, all
of them will appear in The Sun.

about politics this year, but this
is a reminder that we do have
a Demorratic Primary coming

The Airman's Medal for hero
ism involving voluntary risk of
life was awarded to Chaplain
(Maj.) Albert D Owens, a pat
ient at the PSAF Medical Cen
ter, Keesler AFB in recent cere
monies.

Chaplain Owens was honored
for his actions Oct. 11. 1968 in
Ankara, Turkey According to
the citation, he "rushed to an
area where a vehicle had caught
fire With complete disregard
for his own safety, and despite
tho hazard of exploding fuel
smoke Chaplain Owens dispor
sed a crowd of curiosit} seek
ers who seemed unaware of the
impending danger and fought
the fire until it was exting
uished."
A graduate uf New berry Col
lege and the Fmversitv of South
Carolina, the chaplain entered
the Air Force in 1961
He and his wife, the former
Man K Livingston, both of
New ben}, have two ehildren.

budget reading
City Council here Tuesday
gave first reading to a proposed
$2 1 million budget for 1970-71
The budget includes $13 mil
lion for gross utilities and $738.-
275 for general government
expenditures. Included in these
expenditures is an estimated
$40,756, including $22,07)6 for a
new computer and $14,000 for
a truck
City Manager K W Riebe
said the new budget does not
call for any additional tax lb'
