The young award winners are Lillie Yvonne Bobb, Gallman High School, daughter of Mrs. Chanie J. Bobb, 418 Boundary, and James Ralph McEntire, Jr., Newberry High School, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph McEntire. Sr., 1424 Ebenezer Road. The presentation of the En cyclopedias was made to the high school students by Dr. Frank Hoskins, president of the Bachman Honor Society and head of the department of Eng lish at Newberry College. The Society hopes to inspire students to develop powers of intellect and a degree of use fulness to the church and state. Each year, graduating seniors at Newberry College who have the highest grade-point, charact er and promise are elected tc the Society. Calvin Crozier chapter meets The Calvin Crozier Chapter, will meet Tuesday, June second at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Mrs. A. T. Neely, 1226 Calhoun Street. Other hostesses will be Mrs. James Smith, Sr., Mrs. Martha Jean Hampshire, Mrs. J. F. Hawkins, Miss Dorothy Buzhardt and Mrs. Ben T. An derson. The subject of the program is “Texas”, Miss Jo Shannon, leader. PETITION SUPPORTS S. C. GUARD, LAWMEN A petition listing seven pages of signatures supporting the South Carolina National Guard, state and local law officers in recent actions on the University of South Carolina campus has’ been received by Adjutant General Frank D. Pinckney. The petitioners, identified as tax paying citizens of the State of South Carolina, “deplore the conditions permitted to exist on the campus. . .and feel that cir cumstances that triggered vio lence and destruction should have been curbed long ago.” The petition continued, “We support the National Guard, state and local law officers in using whatever force is neces sary to halt the campus revolu tion and hope and pray that the situation can be controlled with out bloodshed.” The endorsers also support those students whose purpose is to pursue their higher educa tion and condemns those stu dents whose sole aim appears to be the disruption of orderly cam pus activities. The signatures appearing on the petition were those of Col umbia area residents with some 13 other South Carolina towns and cities represented. RESIDENCE HALL COUNSELORS NAMED Residence hall counselors and officers at Newberry College for the 1970-71 school year have been named by the dean of stu dents, Albert Jabs, and Hattie Belle Lester, dean of women. Among the hall counselors are Jane Paysinger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald C. Pay- singer, 2010 E. Wells Park Dr., and Billy Koch, son of Rev. and Mrs. J. H. Koch, Jr., 1307 Drayton Street. IB committees have meetings The Tuberculosis and Health Association of Area 6 has had two of the program of work committees to meet and begin work in their field of activities. The patient services commit tee, of which Mrs. W. C. Koon of Newberry is a member, met May 14. The Community Service Com mittee, of which Mr. James D. Brown of Newberry is chair man met May 19 and voted on the activities for the year. They stressed the importance of the tuberculin test for infants, for school entrees, and the seventh grade. The discontinued use of the Mobile X-ray Unit was discuss ed and the fact that the public should be informed that the var ious county health departments offer this service (chest x-ray) along with tuberculin testing, and that there is no charge for this service. All citizens were urged to contact their health department and arrange for a tuberculin test. The committee agreed to co operate with health officials on water and air pollution and to participate in the anti-smoking campaign, “Kick the Habit” dur ing the month of June. Bush River road subject of meet There will be a meeting of all interested citizens at the Bush River School on the night of May 28th. at 7:30. This meeting will concern the improvement of the Bush River Road. This includes interested citizens of the county and those who use the road as well as property owners.
