Mid-Carolina 1970 Graduating Class
Awards given at
Mid-Carolina
Awards Day Exercises were
held at Mid-Carolina High
School May 22 in the school
gymnatorium Awards present
ed by H. M. Bedenbaugh, Prin
cipal, were as follows:
Valedictorian, Donald Wise,
the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kirby
C. Wise of Prosperity. Donald
had a scholastic record in high
school of 96.30. He also received
the English. Math, Science and
Social Studies awards for having
the highest academic average
in these subjects. The Newberry
Observer presented Donald an
award for having the highest
academic average of any ath
lete participating in two majoi
sports.
Salutatorian, Janet Amick, a
daughter of Mr and Mrs. S
Ray Amick of Prosperity Janet
had a scholastic record in high
school of 95.53.
Earl Griffin was presented the
French award for having the
highest academic average in
French. Earl is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. A. J. Griffin of Pom-
ana.
Randy Ruff was selected by
the faculty to receive a leader
ship award for outstanding ser
vice to the Mid-Carolina High
School as President of the Stu
dent Council.
Gay Amick received the com
merce award for having the
highest scholastic record in the
full commercial courses as de
termined by the commerce
teachers. Gay is the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Amick of
Prosperity.
Annual awards are given each
year to students chosen to help
publish The Rebel the Mid-
Carolina High School yearbook.
They were Sherry Bedenbaugh,
Elditor; Frances Koon, business
manager: Judy Pinner, photo
editor; Earl Griffin, art editor;
Jan Rader, layout editor; Carol
Jean Garner and Vickie Schum-
pert, subscription managers;
Tommy Dawkins, copy editor;
Marilyn Berley, club editor.
School paper awards, given
to students chosen to help pub

Carolina High School newspaper
were Robbie Koon, editor; Frank
Lake, business manager; Mar
ian Hall, Gay Amick, Susan
Frick, Vicky Watts, Judy Rawls,
Terry Rawls served as staff
members. Typists for the paper
were Debra Boozer, Dale Frick,
Patsy Graham, Ann Koon, Bet
ty Leitzsey, Chloe Moore and
Sandra Myers.
Cheryl Fulmer was given a
medal for having served as edi
tor of the Literary Magazine.

Sease.
The Girls’ citizenship award
was given to Marian Hall, by
the Literary Sorosis of Prosper
ity, for being chosen by the
faculty as the best candidate
for future citizenship. Marian
is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
James Hall of Little Mountain
The boys' citizenship aware
was given to Donald Wise, pre
sented by the Prosperity Civi-
tan Club, chosen by the faculty
as possessing outstanding lead
ership. service, dependability
and patriotism.
Judy Rawls was selected b>
the faculty to receive the Fac
ulty Service award for service
to the school and faculty. She
is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Bobby Rawls of Pomaria.
Danforth Leadership Awards
are presented each vear to an
outstanding senior boy and girl.
This year these awards were
given to Rita Long and Terry
Rawls.

the Dean's List for the second
semester of 1969-70. To achieve
the Dean’s List, a student musi

ratio for the semester.

ship in the Order of Hippo
crates, the premedical honor
ary of Duke University. The
purpose of the honorary is tc
recognize those premeds whe
have maintained a high schol
astic average, have shown lead
ership ability, and have strong
moral character. Initiation was
held at the Premedical Society’s
annual banquet on May 14. Beth
is a rising Senior at Duke Uni
versity.
POST OFFICE BE
CLOSED SATURDAY
The Newberry Post Office will
be closed Saturday, May 30 in
observance of Memorial Day.
There will be no delivery ser
vice on city or rural delivery
routes. Collection service will
be limited to lobby drops and
the courtesy box on the side of
the post office. There will be
no window service but the usual
lockbox service will be provid
ed. Special delivery mail will
be delivered and holiday sche
dules for the receipt and dis
patch of mails will be observed,
according to Acting Postmaster
James Counts.
Mary Parr wins
Erskine honor
Mary B. Parr, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Henry L. Parr,
Rt. 3, Newberry, served as a
sophomore class marshal at
Erskine College graduation ex-
ercies May 24.
Miss Parr, a 1968 graduate
of Newberry High School, earn
ed the honor by compiling the
highest academic average a-
mong Erskine sophomore wo
men for 1969-70.
Resque Squad to
hold open house
The Newberry County Rescue
Squad wishes to invite all the
people of our county to an Open
House at our building on Johns
ton St. Sunday, May 31 from
2:00 until 6:00 p.m. This wil
give the people a chance to
see the equipment needed in
rescue work.
At the same time the mem
bers of all the rescue squads
in Newberry County wish every
one a happy and accident-free
Memorial Day week-end.
