WRAL-TV, in which he told of
letters which were written in
California and distributed to a
number of states to be mailed
from those states, supposedly
from constituents, in opposition
to the nomination of Judge Har
old Carswell to the S u p r e m e
Court. One such shipment, he
said, was to a “Bob Friedman”
at Carrboro, N. C. Bob Fried
man failed to show up to get
the package and it was deliver
ed by postal authorities to the
office of the two North Carolina
Senators in Washington.
In his Vewpoint of May 1, Mr.
Helms reveals a little more in
formation about the incident:
“. . .a bit of investigation re
veals there was—and perhaps
still is—a ‘Bob Friedman’ in
Carrboro, N. C. He still has a
telephone listed in his name at
Carrboro, but repeated calls
by us to his listed number failed
to result in an answer at the
other end.
“Mr. Friedman’s full name,
as given us by the information
operator, is Robert D. Fried
man; the address given was
Camelot Apartments in Carr
boro. The number given us by
the operator is 942-3024.
“This is the same name, and
the same number, listed in a
publication called The Mill-

that outfit is known as the
Young Socialist Alliance. And
the publication—‘The Militant’,
lists ‘Bob Friedman’ of Carr
boro as the Young Socialist Al
liance ‘representative’ for the
Chapel Hill-Durham area. The
telephone number listed in the
publication is identical to that
of the Robert D. Friedman,
whose number was given us by
the information operator. The
operator stated that there is no
other ‘Bob’ or ‘Robert’ Fried
man listed in Carrboro.
“One may reasonably assume
therefore, that the defeat of
Judge Carswell was engineered
in part by such elements as
the so-called ‘Young Socialist
Alliance’ which admits its com
munist connections. The tactics
speak for themselves.”
This is one bit of evidence
for those who may doubt that
much of the mischief in the
country today is the work of
coummunists.

DIES IN COLUMBIA
Stanley McCain Hamiter, Sr.,
79, of Columbia, died Tuesday
in the Veterans Hospital of Col
umbia. He was the husband of
Mrs. Sarah Fellers Hamiter, a
native of Newberry.
Funeral services were held in
Columbia with burial in Elm
wood Cemetery.

Jaycees against
lawlessness
The following resolution was
unanimously adopted at a meet
ing of Region Eight chapters of
the South Carolina Jaycees, held
May 12 in Lexington. The ten
Jaycee chapters in the Region
were all represented at the
meeting. Among them was the
Newberry Jaycee Chapter.
According to Earl O. Ayers,
Regional Vice President, “The
resolution clearly states our pos
ition on the lawlessness that is
being allowed in our state and
nation and we feel that our
opinion is shared by the vast
majority of American citizens.”

Be it resolved that the Jay
cee Chapters of Region Eight,
namely Newberry, Cayce-West
Columbia, Fairfield, Columbia,
Lexington, C. C. I., Swansea,
Batesburg-Leesville, St. And
rews, and West Columbia, here
by express in the strongest pos
sible terms our complete con
tempt for the lawless element
which has attempted to destroy
the peace and tranquility of the
University of South Carolina,
and to subvert the rights of its
students, faculty, and adminis
tration through the use of force,
violence, and intimidation.
We likewise condemn those
who have committed similar
acts of sedition in other parts
of our country.
We call on all Americans who
are opposed to the opinions and
methods of these anarchists to
make known their opposition to
and their intolerance of further
unlawful acts spawned by the
alien philosophy espoused by
these misguided individuals.
We further call on the ad
ministration of the University
of South Carolina and on the
State of South Carolina to im
mediately take whatever steps
necessary to rid the campus of
all those who reject reason and
the rule of law in an attempt
to disrupt and destroy, and we
demand that these individuals
be prosecuted to the fullest ex
tent of the law.

and South Carolinians, we re
affirm our faith in our country,
its leaders, and our wav of
