Well, now, the question is
this: this is the month of May;
but in the last days of April
the time changed and did you
change with it'.’ An hour's dif
ference amounts to this- you
must get up an hour earlier.

Our government of the Nat
ion does not have smooth sail
ing The President of the Pol
led States is Republican, our
Senator Strom Thurmond is a
Republican, our Mendel Rivers
remains Democrat and he is a
power in Congress, being chair
man of one of the most power
ful committees in the whole
Congress. 1, likewise, am in
confusion, being a strong sup
porter of Mendel Rivers who
is the Congressman from my
district; and I am an enthus
iastic supporter of President
Nixon and Senator Thurmond.
Therefore with so many Demo
crats in Congress, what can
our President do? So, what can
the Congress do 9
It seems that the Senate wish
es to thwart the President and
humiliate him as it did in re
fusing to seat two able judges
on the Supreme Court Bench.
So to whom shall we look. The
Republican party or the Demo
cratic party?
Mendel Rivers probably has
done more for South Carolina
than any other man in Con
gress, Strom Thurmond has
been the most outspoken man
we have had in the Senate in
my recollection.
Someone reminds me that
Senator Ben Tillman frequently
spoke out, and he brought the
Naval Station from Port Royal
to Charleston although he hated
Charleston and Charleston hat
ed him. Rather than lose the
Naval Station he worked for
Charleston.
Sen. Tillman from Edgefield
County, which may not be rich
but has produced many able
men. The latest is Senator
Strom Thurmond, although later
he moved to Aiken.
I heard the recent speech by
President Nixon and I feel a
deep admiration for the Presi
dent’s course. He has taken the
Nation into his confidence more
than any other president has
done. As to the President’s pol
icy in Cambodia, I think it is
safe for us to go along with
him.
I disagree entirely in the Nat
ional policy of so-called inte
gration. I think the failure to
recognize the racial differences
is a stupendous blunder. I say
this as one who has traveled
all over the Nation, as a teach
er in all grades of schools,
from a common school in Aiken
County to The Citadel in
Charleston. I may mention that

In Kaula Lumpur, Malysia, a cross
country race was held. The race was to
cover a seven mile course. Two hours
after the race had begun, ample time
for the runners to cover the course,
none of the runners had returned. The
officials, fearing that something might
have happened, set out in automobiles
to find the runners.
The officials found all of the run
ners six miles away, and sprinting in
the wrong direction. Many of the run
ners had already covered distances of
ten miles. A. J. Rogers, the associa
tion secretary, said the mixup appar
ently occurred when the lead runner
took a wrong turn at the fifth check
point and the rest followed him!
We Follow
Sometimes this happens. We play
fellow the leader without knowing
where the leader is going. We do
things simply because someone else
does them. We make our decisions be
cause someone else has made the same
decision before us. And while this is
not always bad, it most certainly isn’t
always good.
All of us should be aware of where
it is that we are going. One of the
greatest mistakes of so many in our
society is that they are running as fast
as they can, following the man in
front of them, trying desperately to
catch up, and not knowing where the
fellow they are following is headed.
Occasionally someone will come
along who will consider where it is that
he wants to go. He stops long enough
to study where following the man in
front will lead. These people make up
their own minds about which way the
race should be going.
The Galilean was a Fellow like this.
There was a full-pledged race going
when He came upon the scene. All the
runners were following the leaders.
They were pushing with all they had
to keep up, to be abreast, racing with
the crowd. The leaders had always run
their path, and they never questioned
it’s authenticity. They simply took for
granted that the runner in front was
going the right way.
Enters Race
Then He came into the race. He saw
where those who were supposed to be
leading the race were headed, and He
knew that that was not the path that
the Judge had set for the race. So He
stopped, took note of the roads, and
headed off in another direction. Since
He was the Leader in this new direc
tion, the leaders that were going in
the other direction became very angry
that He should do such a thing. Why
didn’t He follow them like all the other
runners? Of course, the only thing to
do was to belittle Him, and eventually
get rid of Him. He could prove dang
erous to the course they were leading!
Somehow, this same idea of follow
ing the leader that prevailed back
then is still around today. If the first
car passes an injured man on the
highway, all the others are supposed
to do the same. If one man takes a
joke at Christian values, all other men
who follow do the same. If one man
shuns another man of different color,
then we all must shun him. It’s a
game we play. We call it follow the
leader.
I believe I would rather know where
I’m going than to be in a hurry to
follow the man in front of me.

complete manager of Anderson
College. I do not speak as an
intolerant critic but I am speak
ing as a man who has lived in
the South, and attended three
universities, one in New York
City. Let us look facts in the
face.
Grants given
to college
The Newberry College Found
ation. Inc., has made unres
tricted grants of over $52,000
in the last three and one-half
years to Newberry College, ac
cording to Dr. Robert C Farb,
secretary of the Foundation and
director of development for the
College.
Dr Farb made the announce
ment at the annual meeting of
the Foundation last week.
During the meeting the Board
oi Directors re-elected its three
officers Dr. Frwm G. Balmi
er. Atlanta, president: Dr. John
F. Clarkson, Newberry, treas
urer : and I >r. Farb for another
one year term.
The Foundation was formed
m 19(15 for the purpose of
strengthening the financial re
sources of tin' College from
friends who make an annual gin
on a continuing basis.
The Board also re-elected the
following men to serve on the
Board for a two-year term: Dr.

BIRTH OF DAUGHTER

ingston III announce the birth
of a daughter, Sunie Elizabeth,
on April 30 in Atlanta, Georgia.
The baby is named for her
great-grandmother, Mrs. R. E.
Livingston, Sr.

The friends of Mrs. Caroline
Schenck will be sorry to learn
that she is a patient in the
Cape Fear Valley Hospital, Rm.
273, Fayetteville, N. C. She
fractured her hip in a fall last
week.
AMERICA THE
BEAUTIFUL?
That s the way we found it. Almost five centuries
ago. A technicolor world of blue water and purple
mountain ranges... green forests and gleaming
white beaches. And of course, it still could be that
way. One trouble is, some of us get careless occa
sionally about littering up this lovely land of ours.
Little individual acts of tossing and discarding that
result in a lot of unsightliness. That's why we hope
that motorists, fishermen, picnickers, hunters—all
of us, in fact —become anti-litter conscious. Let's
take the time to preserve the timeless beauty of
our country.
