The program will contain works from the renaissance to the contemporary, and from composers ranging from Bach to Muczynski. The group is also scheduled to perform May 11 before the band students at Dreher High School, Columbia, and Brook- land Cayce High School in West Columbia. The ensemble is und er the direction of Dr. John Wagner, assistant professor of music. Timothy Parkman is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Park- man of Route 1. Miss Kiki Kirkland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Kirkland, won the Miss Newberry title at the pageant held Saturday night at Newberry High School auditor ium, and received her crown from the reigning Miss South Carolina, Miss Brantlee Price. (Sunphoto) College GOPS names officers Hal Derrick, a rising sopho more at Newberry College, was elected chairman of the New berry College Republicans fo' 1970-71 in a special election hek April 9. Also elected were Dan Ruff, rising junior, vice-chairman; Miss Jo Anne Smith, a rising sophomore, recording secretary and Miss Harriette Hedgepath. rising junior, treasurer. Mr. Derrick is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold G. Derrick o. Columbia. He served as football statistician to the Newberry Col lege Indians this past fall, serv ed on the editorial staff of the Newberrian, and was a report er for the student newspaper. The Indian. He is also a mem ber of the Lutheran Student As sociation and Theta Chi Social Fraternity. Mr. Derrick’s political activi ties include serving as campaign aide to the newly elected S.C. State College Republican chair man. W. Harold Koon of New berry. Hal will travel to Jack sonville the end of April to at tend a Student Co-Ordinator’s school under the auspices of the National College Republican committee. Mr. Ruff is also of Columbia, the son of Mr. and Mrs. D. George Ruff. He is a member of the International Relations Club and was recently appoint ed a member of the S. C. State Student Legislature, a non-part isan group representing all col lege and university students in South Carolina. Dan has been active in the College Republicans the past two years and served as a mem ber of Young Carolinians for Parker in 1968. He is a political science major. Miss Smith is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer K. Smith, John’s Island. She is a 1969 graduate of St. John’s High School and is an elementary education major at Newberry College. Jo Anne was an active mem ber of the Charleston County Teenage Republicans in the 1968 election of Richard Nixon, serv ing as chairman of this organi zation. During the summer she was recipient of a Scholarship Award to attend the National Teenage Republican Federation Youth Camp held in Louisiana. Miss Hedgepath is a resident of Newberry, daughter of Coach and Mrs. Harry H. Hedgepath of 1623 Harrington Street. She is a 1968 graduate of Newberry High School and is an elemen tary education major at the college. Miss Hedgepath is a member of the staff of The Newberrian and will serve as business man ager for 1970-71. She served as co-chairman of “Project Brant lee” last fall which was in sup port of Miss South Carolina, Brantlee Price competing in At lantic City for the title of Miss America. Her College Republican acti vities include having served as an executive committee mem ber for the past two years and also a member of the New berry County Summer Young Republicans the past year. Student paper wins honors “The Cordial”, student news paper at Newberry High, has been judged best among South Carolina Class II school papers, the South Carolina Scholastic Press Association announced last week. The award for editorial ex cellence was presented to the paper’s editor, Mary Baker, at an awards banquet last Thurs day at Capstone House in Col umbia. Martin Armfield, student pho tographer for the “Cordial”, won two individual trophies in a photography competition spon sored by the State Record Co. His entries in the school acti vities and in the sports action divisions were named best in the state. Miss Baker won third place honors for editorial writing and Sports Editor Bill Whitacre was third in competition among the sports columnists. CIVIC LEAGUE MEETING TUESDAY The Newberry Civic League will meet Tuesday, April 28 at 4 p.m. in the Community Hall. Speaker for this meeting will be Mrs. C. M. Smith, chairman of the Newberry County Com mittee on Children and Youth for the 1970 White House Con ference. Mrs. F. Scott Elliott, Sr. will serve as chairman of hostesses. The League president, Prof. F. Scott Elliott, Sr., urges a good attendance by League members and cordially invites the public to attend. HEAD STUDENT CHRISTIAN GROUP Three students at Newberry College have been elected to head the Student Christian As sociation for 1970-71 school year. Taking over the president’s chair is George Sims, Columbia junior. He will be assisted by two vice-presidents: Jeannie Armfield, Whitmire junior, and Stephen Bashore, Shamokin, Pa. junior. The Student Christian Asso ciation attempts to stimulate re ligious life on the Lutheran col lege campus. QUINTET TO GIVE RECITAL A student Woodwind Quintet will present a concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 28 in Wiles Cha pel on the college campus. Army reserve anniversary WHEREAS a number of citi zens of this community are act ive members of the U. S. Army Reserve units which train in our state, while countless oth ers are non-unit members or have served in the U. S. Army Reserve at one time in their lives; and WHEREAS these citizen-sold iers of the Army Reserve, both locally and nationally have been mobilized five times dur ing the 62-year history of the Army Reserve; and WHEREAS these citizen sold iers of the Army Reserve have chosen to mark their 62nd an niversary selflessly by partici pating in programs aimed to make this community a better place in which to live; THEREFORE, I, Clarence A Shealy, Jr., Mayor of Newberry proclaim the month of April as U. AGN RECOMMENDS JULY 4TH CLOSING The Association for a Greater Newberry has recommended a schedule for the observance of the July Fourth holiday: close on Saturday July 4th; open on Monday, July 6th. BILOXI — Second Lieutenant John L. Weaver, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Weaver of Wrights ville Beach, N. C., has grad uated at Keesler AFB, Miss., from the U. S.
