The Newberry Sun, Newberry, S. C., Thursday, April 9, 19!70—PAGE 3 Dr. Robert Buker and family of Lafayette, Indiana were recent visitors to Newberry County. Working with the local County Agent’s office, Dr. Buker is evaluating a promising new variety of Alfalfa being tested on sev eral Newberry County dairy farms, including Henry L. Parr, William Ballentine, W. D. Cromer and Harold Pitts. Dr. Buker is Director of Research of Farmers’ Forage Cooperative of Lafayette, Indiana and who developed the new Alfalfa variety. On his most recent visit to Newber ry, Dr. Buker was accompained by Mrs. Buker and daugh ters Patty, Vicki and Kathy. Schedule for pre-school given Pre-school registration and testing sessions for all students entering the first grade in Sep tember 1970 will be held as shown below: All clinics will be conducted from 9 a.m. until 12 noon. Boundary Street attendance area, Boundary School, April 21; Speers St. area, Speers School, April 22;Silverstreet area, Reu ben School, April 23; Bush River area, Bush River School, April 28; Whitmire area, Park School, April 29; Pomaria area, Pomar- ia School, April 30; Lt. Moun tain area, Lt. Mountain school, May 5; Prosperity area, Pros perity School, May 7. Registration forms and medi cal blanks will be available in the principal’s office of each school in Newberry County. Parents are requested to pick these blanks and have the fam ily physician fill out the medi cal blank before taking t h e child to be registered. School principals may help by sending blanks home to parents who have pre-school children. Parents are reminded that a child must be 6 years old on or before November 1 before they can be enrolled in the first grade. Birth certificates will be required and parents are asked to bring birth certificates when they register their child. S. C. law requires that a child be vac cinated for smallpox before be ing enrolled in the first grade. Parents are required to have children vaccinated prior to re gistration. No child will be en rolled in the first grade without a birth certificate and proof of vaccination of smallpox. First graders now in school will not attend school on the day that registration is held in their attendance area. This will allow all first grade teachers in the schools in the attendance areas to help register and test stu dents. Mrs. Connie Lollis, school nurse, will be present at all re gistration sessions. It is most important that all parents who expect to have first graders in September fol low these instructions and see that their children are properly registered on time. Take part in state meeting Two Newberry College faculty members appeared on the pro gram of the S. C. Literacy As sociation’s annual convention in Columbia Saturday. The Rev. Harry Weber, Coll ege chaplain, led a discussion on literacy workshops and Mrs. Elaine Paul, assistant professor of history, was the chairman for a session on improved literature for the illiterates. Mrs. Paul was also chairman of the elect ion committee. The two College staff mem bers along with 20 other New berry College students and staff members have been participat ing this year in the “each-one- teach-one” program of teaching adult illiterates of South Caro lina how to read. FRANK H. WARD part of the state-wide project sponsored by the S. C. Junior Chamber of Commerce. W. D. Workman, III, of Green ville and state chairman of the Jaycee Adult Education Promo tion Project, points out that South Carolina has 231,000 adults who are functionally illiterate— they cannot read or write well enough to get along in today’s world. “Newberry County has 3,175 such persons of whom 1,306 are white and 1,867 are Negroes,” Workman said. “Statewide there are some 95,000 white and 136,- 000 Negroes who are function ally illiterate.” The Laubach Literacy Crusade uses the “each-one-teach-one’ method to instruct illiterates, in which a tutor takes a short training program and teaches an individual who wants to improve his literacy level. Newberry College’s participa tion in the program is designed primarily to train persons to conduct workshops for tutors. At present there are over 600 adults being tutored throughout the state under the program. Robert E. McIntyre, Center- town, Ky. and Sandra Elaine Mize, Newberry were married in Newberry on March 31 by Probate Judge Frank H. Ward. Mr. and Mrs. P. A.
