C., Thursday, March 12, 1970—PAGE 5 Heads Students Newberry College students went to the polls Thursday and elected three of their four stu dent government officers for the 1970-71 school year. The fourth office, that of vice-president will be decided in a run-off election next week. Elected to lead the Student Government Association was Billy Koch, Newberry junior. Assisting him will be Patricia Duggins, Greeneville, Tennes see sophomore, secretary; and Debra Gerling, Fanwood, N. J. sophomore, treasurer. John Kinser, Jacksonville, Fla ' junior, and Betty Sharpe, jun ior from Orangeburg, are the two vice-presidential candidates who will have their names on the ballot again next week. Koch is the current treasurer of the SGA, president of the junior class, and has been nam ed co-captain of the 1970 foot ball squad. He is the son of Rev. and Mrs. J. H. Koch, Jr., 1307 Drayton Street. Safety Circus at Boundary A nationally famous “Safety Circus” will combine knowledge with fun for school children in Newberry on Monday, March 23. A special performance of the show will be given at 9:50 a.m. at the Boundary Street Elemen tary School. Conducted by Police Officer Ernest E. Pressley, the show is currently on a three-week tour that will take it to 14 South Carolina communities. The current tour is sponsor ed by the Motor Transportation Association of South Carolina, Inc., in cooperation with the State Department of Education, the Highway Department, and South Carolina law enforcement organizations. Nationwide spon sor is the American Trucking Associations, Inc., Washington, D. C., national federation of the motor carrier industry. Police Officer Ernest Press ley’s “Safety Circus” show, fea turing ten highly trained dogs performing tricks illustrating traffic safety practices, is a mixture of child psychology and show biz. The format is pur posely simple with the mono logue liberally sprinkled with safety rules and correct safety practices The central theme is “Walk Safe—Ride Safe—Play Safe”. In 1946 Officer Pressley was a motorcycle officer with the Charlotte, N. C. police depart ment. Charlotte Police Chief took Pressley off motorcycle duty and sent him back to school. He has been in hund reds of schools since and has loved every minute of it. The program, which runs for 40 minutes, has been presented in 48 states. It has been en dorsed by the National Safety Council, the International Asso ciation of Chiefs of Police, by FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, and by educators and civic groups throughout the nation. After the show, Officer Press- ley distributes traffic safety questionnaires. Children who answer the questions correctly become eligible for membership in Officer Pressley’s Junior Traffic Safety Club and are sent a certificate of membership by ATA. Since Officer Pressley went back to school he has travelled more than 400,000 miles. With his canine friends he is on the road throughout the school year teaching safety and providing entertainment. He has made 5,000,000 school children laugh and learn a vital traffic safety message. Lay witness mission be at Lewis Church A Lay Witness Mission will be held at the Lewis Memorial United Methodist church this weekend, March 13-15. Sessions will be held beginning Friday evening and ending on Sunday evening. The Lay Witness Mission is a movement which had its start five years ago in the southeast ern jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church and sprang from the ministry of Mr. Ben C. Johnson, who was at that time a pastor in Alabama. In this movement, laymen share with other laymen what they have found the love of Christ to mean in their lives. The Mission at Lewis Memor ial will be led by Mr. Buddy Strickland from Landis, North Carolina. Mr. Strickland is the personnel director for a chain of textile mills in North Caro- ' lina and has wide experience in leading Lay Witness Missions. He will be accompanied to New berry by a group of 25 lay wit nesses from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The group will arrive in New berry on Friday afternoon about 5:00. The first session of the Lewis Lay Witness Mission will begin with a supper at the church fellowship hall on Friday even ing at 6:30. On Saturday morn ing coffee groups will meet in various homes of the congre gation. On Saturday at noon, a men’s and ladies luncheon group will meet. The youth of the church will hold sessions thru- out the day in the Oakland com munity hall. Members of the Lay Witness team will visit in the homes of congregational members throughout the after noon and on Saturday evening at 7:30 a second congregational meeting will be held. The climatic service of the mission will take place Sunday morning at 11:00; after which there will be a church-wide fellowship dinner and farewell to the Lay Witnesses. All services of the Mission are open to the public and members of other churches in terested in having a Lay Wit ness Mission in their church are invited to attend the Lewis Mission as observers.
