Future Farmers observe week with program This year the Future Farm ers of America club is em phasizing Agriculture during the National FFA Week, February 21-28. The Newberry FFA chapter is sponsoring several activities on Sunday afternoon February 22 from 3 to 5 p.m. There will be a childrens’ barnyard dis play on the Newberry High School front campus, agricul tural film will be shown in the Ag. classroom, and several farms in the Newberry High area will be available for ob servation. These farms are the Harold Pitts dairy farm, Travis Moore’s poultry farm, and Bur ton Sease’s swine operation. Those who are not familiar with the location of the farms are asked to stop by the high school Sunday afternoon and pick up a descriptive route. FFA president Danny Moore urges all who are interested to come out for this event from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon. FFA members will be on hand for all the events. TO PRESENT BEAUTY AWARD Miss Emily Pierce of South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism will be in Newberry Friday to present an award to the Newberry Coun ty Beautification Committee for winning first place during last quarter in the annual beautifi cation contest. The presentation will be made at City Hall at 2:30 p.m., ac cording to Martyn Cavanaugh, co-chairman of the county com mittee. '-i I I — 1 . ; - -v j ! .'S#. m . ■ ■ v* The Greenwood Social Secur ity Office has received the re sults of a recent study which reveals that many disabled per sons lose benefits each month in the Greenwood area because they wait too long to file dis ability claims. H. M. Spiller, field represen tative of the Greenwood Social Security Office, said such losses will probably continue to occur unless the general public leanrs more about social security dis ability requirements and learns when a claim should be filed. The sad thing is most of those who lost benefits really needed the money during this critical time. Mr. Spiller pointed out that while no benefits may be paid for the first six full months a person is disabled, he should not wait that long to file a claim. He should file imme diately if his disabling condi tion is expected to last at least 12 months. When a person files early, the paper work can be completed, and the first check can be paid on time. He urges anyone needing information ab out disability benefits to con tact the Social Security Gifice at 219 Magnolia Ave., Green wood, telephone 223-1711. Take training in accounting Five senior accounting stu dents at Newberry College are getting a taste of accounting as a career this month as they intern for Certified Public Ac countant (CPA) firms in Char lotte and Greenville. The internships are part of the requirements for one of the College’s month-long Interim courses. Following a three-day train ing school in Washington, D.C. the five interns were assigned to area industries working as AWARDS PROGRAM TO BE MONDAY An awards program for the poster and essay contest, “Beauty is Everybody’s Busi ness”, will be held in the audi torium of the County Agricul ture Building, Monday Feb. 23 at 3:30 p.m. County winners will be pre sented savings bonds donated by C. Long, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Long, Route 1, Pomaria, was assigned Dec. 12 to the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam as a helicopter mechanic. VIETNAM — Earnest Wal lace, son of Mrs. Flora B. Wal lace of 421 Boundary St., was promoted to Army sergeant first class Dec. 20 near Saigon, Viet nam while serving with the 4th Transportation Command. Sgt. Wallace is an operations sergeant with the command’s Headquarters Company. He was last stationed in Germany. NOTICE OF DEMOCRATIC PRECINCT MEETINGS COUNTY CONVENTION The Democratic Party Pre cinct Clubs of Newberry Coun ty will meet at their regular voting precincts on Saturday, February 28, 1970, at three o’clock P.M. for the purpose of reorganization. Each club will elect a presi dent, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, executive committee man and delegates to the coun ty convention. Officers elected must be reported to the Clerk of Court for Newberry County between the hours of 9-11 a.m. on Monday, March 2, 1970. A list of delegates certified to by the president and secretary of each club must be sent with the delegates to the convention. The county convention will be held at eleven o’clock A.M. on Monday, March 2, 1970 at the Newberry County Court House.
