THE NEWBERRY COLLEGE SINGERS under the direction of Dr. Milton W. Moore will begin a mid-winter tour to Maryland, North Carolina,
Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington D. C. the first week in February. The Choir will sing in Lutheran churches, high schools, and the Wash
ington Cathedral in Washington D. C. during the week-long tour. The first concert is scheduled for the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Hick
ory, North Carolina on Sunday, Februrary 1.
J. L. Thomasson
dies at age 80
James L. “Jim” Thomasson,
80, died Saturday at the Forest
Hill Division of the VA Hos
pital in Augusta, Georgia.
Mr. Thomasson was born in
this county, son of the late
Beauregard and Rosanna Hogg
Thomasson. He was a retired
employee of Oakland Plant of
the Kendall Company. He was
a member of West End Baptist
Church, of the American Leg
ion and W. W. I Barracks.
H is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Rosa Elizabeth “Lilia”
Thomasson; one daughter, Mrs.
Mary Springfield of Augusta,
Georgia; four brothers, John
and Ben Thomasson, both of
Newberry, Beauregard Thomas
son of Abbeville and Joe Thom
asson; two sisters, Mrs. Kath
leen Hogge of Charleston and
Miss Lola May Thomasson of
Newberry; and five grandchild
ren.
Funeral services were con
ducted Monday at the Whita
ker Funeral Home by the Rev.
Boyd Duckett. Interment was
in Rosemont Cemetery.
Mrs. Maddox, 55,
rites Tuesday
Mrs. Ellen Cumalander Mad
dox, 55, died suddenly Sunday
morning at the Lowman Home
where she was on the staff.
Mrs. Maddox was bom in Lit
tle Mountain, the daughter of
James A. Cumalander and the
late Mrs. Luella Boland Cuma
lander. Prior to working at the
Lowman Home, she was em
ployed at the Newberry County
Memorial Hospital as a regis
tered nurse. She was a mem
ber of Holy Trinity Lutheran
Church.
Besides her father, she is sur
vived by a son, James F. Mad
dox of Fairfax, Va.; one grand
daughter, Miss Susan Maddox
of Fairfax, Va.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday afternoon at Holy Trin
ity Lutheran Church. Burial was
in the church cemetery.
ANOTHER ONE IN FOR STEVE HOLLINGSWORTH
Saturday night in MacLean Gymnasium when the New
berry Indians downed the Mars Hill Lions 91-82. The
Maryland senior made 20 points in Saturday’s venture;
so far he has bucketed 320 points for the season to be the
Indians scoring leader in the first 14 games.
MRS. J. H. COOPER
Mrs. Iris Leaphart Cooper,
49, of 29 Laurel Dr., Lexington,
died Saturday in the Fort Jack-
son Hospital.
Among her survivors is a
brother, J. C. Leaphart of Pros
perity.
Funeral servics were held
Monday in the Lexington Meth
odist Church conducted by Rev.
Ralph W. Atkinson. Burial was
in Lexington Memorial Ceme
tery.
J. E. Wiseman’s
brother dies
Dr. Perry Haynes Wiseman,
71, resident physician in Hen
rietta, N. C., for the past 45
years, died at Rutherford Hos
pital Sunday, Jan. 11.
He was a son of the late Cato
Baxter Wiseman and Margaret
Wray Wiseman.
Dr. Wiseman was graduated
from the University of North
Carolina and from the Medical
College of Virginia. He began
his medical practice in Hen
rietta in July 1925.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Grace F. Wiseman; one
daughter, Mrs. Percy C. Clarke
Jr. of Lancaster, Pa.; one sis- »
ter, Mrs. E. T. Childs, Jr. of
Lincolnton; one brother, James
E. Wiseman of Newberry.
Funeral services were con
ducted Wednesday, January 14
at Avondale United Methodist
Church.
