Beard John Watt Beard of Anderson, brother of James N. Beard and William Beard of this city, died Friday in the Anderson Hospi tal following a brief illness. He was a teacher at Boys High in Anderson. Funeral services were held Sunday at the graveside in Old Silver Brook Cemetery with Dr. A. M. Rogers officiating. CHARLESTON, S. Hursey, 1228 Crenshaw St. Under a campus visitor pro gram prospective cadets live in the bar racks with cadet hosts who accompany them to all events and explain life at the military college. Included in the visitor’s schedule are interviews and briefings by upperclass ca dets and faculty and staff officers, tours of campus facilities, attendance at Citadel parades and sports events, and participa tion in social activities. Applicants are required to visit The Citadel during their junior or senior years in high school. College officials state that the program has proved extremely bene ficial in assisting applicants to determine whether they desire to attend The Citadel. Taylor awarded bronze star FAIRFIELD, Calif- U. S. Air Force Master Sergeant Jas. V. Taylor, son of Mrs. Joseph S. Taylor, 713 Crosson St., has been decorated with the Bronze S ar Medal for meritorious ser vice while engaged in military operations against Viet Cong forces. Sergeant Taylor was cited for his outstanding duty perform ance as chief of training for the 460th Field Maintenance Squad ron at Tan Son Nhut AB, Viet nam. He was presented the medal at Travis AFB, Calif., where he is now assigned to the 916th Air Refueling Squadron, a unit of the Strategic Air Command, America’s nuclear deterrent force of long range bombers and intercontinental ballistic missiles. The sergeant, who has 18 years Air Force service, is a veteran of the Korean War. A 1949 graduate of Newberry High School, he attended the College of Guam. His wife, Nancy, is the daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie L. Davis, 402 O’Neal Street. Good records save dollars Good records Can save tax dollars at income tax filing time for South Carolina taxpay ers. H. M. McLeod, District Dir ector of Internal Revenue in South Carolina, said good re cords help you get all the de ductions and credits you are en titled to. A good system for keeping records is to label envelopes or folders according to the types of income and deductions you have, McLeod said. Bills and receipts should be put in the appropriate folder as they are paid. Taxpayers who itemize their deductions on Form 1040 must have available cancelled checks, receipts,statements, and other data to support the claimed de ductions. McLeod said that, in addition to saving tax dollars, good re cord keeping makes preparation of the tax return a much easier task. TO INTERN IN SENATE OFFICE Miss Ellen Williamson, Cor responding Secretary and W. Harold Koon, Chairman of the Newberry College Republicans, will leave this week for Wash ington, D. C. Miss Williamson and Mr. Koon will serve as pol itical interns in the office of Senator Strom Thurmond, R., S. C. during the month of Jan uary. Both Ellen and Harold are students at Newberry College, where they have participatec in the College Republicans since 1966 and are graduates of the South Carolina College Republi can Leadership Training school. Mr. Koon is a graduate of the National Young Republican Fed eration LTS and Campaign man agement school held in Wash ington last spring, 1968. YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY “The overall cost of living keeps going up, and hospital costs are no exceptions,” said H. M. Spiller, Field Represen tative of the Greenwood Social Security Office. Because of the tremendous in crease in the cost of the aver age hospital stay social security Medicare beneficiaries will have an increase in their share of hospital costs. Beginning Jan uary 1, 1970 the social security beneficiary will pay the first than $44 as in the past. In the event the beneficiary stays more than 60 days then his share of the cost will be $13 per day for all days over 60 days up to 90 days. Before January 1, 1970 this was $11 per day. This means the beneficiary who stays in the hospital 90 days will now pay $442 where before the in crease, he would only have paid $374 for the same 90 days. The Indians finished their 1969 schedule of the 1969-70 sea son Wednesday by defeating Lander College 89-82. Hollingsworth, one of a con tingent of four Maryland play ers on Coach Nield Gordon’s Tribe, has averaged 23.7 points a game by making 70 field goals and 28 free throws. The senior star was also named the out standing player in the College of Charleston Tournament and the Tip-Off Tournament at Spartan burg early in the season.
