Christmas Shoppers who
went over board on gifts last
year and want to cut down
on expenses can find some
answers at their local 5 and
10 cent store.
For less than $5 you can
come across scores of little
items that could be ideal pre
sents. The notions counter of
department stores are another
source of gift possibilities.
For Dad you can get an
imitation — .leather tobacco
pouch, a date book or a
sterling silver key chain.
Mother might like a set of
terry-cloth aprons, dish towel
ana potholder or an attractive
metal recipe box. These items
range from 69 cents to $3.
For teen age girls there are
such things as bobby-pin
boxes, hair teasing brushes,
nail polish, lipstick, hair
ribbons and bows and head-
bands. You’ll see many
suitable gifts, just look around.
How about the miniature
scale cars and model trucks
or one of many aames for the
boys on your listr
There are counters full of
things for babies, for little
girls and even for the family
pet.
School cage
tourney to be
at college
The MacLean gym on the col
lege campus will be the scene
of some very spirited basket
ball games this weekend and
Monday evening, December 29.
Seven very competitive teams
have been invited to participate
in the second annual Newberry
College High School Invitational
Tournament to be held on De
cember 26-27 and 29.
In the opening game on Fri
day, Dec. 26, Gray Court-Owings
will play Whitmire beginning at
7 p.m. The second game will
be between Chapin and Clinton,
beginning at 8:15 p.m., while
the final game of the opening
session will be between New
berry and Mid-Carolina at 9:30
p.m.
Winners and losers will play
on Saturday evening, with the
seventh team, Winnsboro going
into action against the winner
of the Gray Court-Owings-Whit-
mire game.
There will be three games
each session and admission to
each session will be $1.50 for
adults and $1.00 for students.
Trophies and awards will be
given to winners of first, se
cond, third, and consolation.
Awards will also be given to
the team displaying the best
sportsmanship, the most spirit
ed cheerleaders, most valuable
player and the all-tournament
members.
Attractive brochures will be
on sale at 25 cents each. A con
cession stand will be in opera
tion for the tournament and a
hospitality room will be in ser
vice for coaches and officials.
Santa issues
warning via
Health Dept.
Santa Claus telephoned State
Health Officer Dr. E. Kenneth
Aycock and instructed him to
inform parents about dangers
of the Christmas season.
The Jolly Old Man warned
that Christmas light cords, also
tempting decorations and sharp
edged toys will send dozens of
children to hospital emergency
rooms unless parents are very
careful.
Santa told Dr. Aycock that
small children should be kept
away from the decorations. He
said that bubbling candle-like
bulbs are safe as long as they
are whole, but children may
break them and try to drink
the fluid containing hydrocar
bons which are poisonous.
Almost all Christmas plants
and decorations are poisonous
if eaten and Santa warned that
only one poinsettia leaf can kill
a child. He added, “Mistletoe
has been known to be fatal to
both children and adults.”
Santa discourages parents sel
ecting gifts which contain small
or loose screws or wooden blocks
that can be swallowed by a very
young child. Finally, he said,
“Gifts which present a danger
of fire or explosion (such as a
chemistry set for the very young
should be avoided.”
After a ten minute conversa
tion with Dr. Aycock, Santa
Claus excused himself, saying
he needed to call the North Caro
lina State Health Officer.
