A, PAGE 5 VISITORS CENTER TO BE CLOSED Duke Power Company has an nounced that the Visitors Center at its Keowee-Toxaway Project in northwest South Carolina will be closed to the public on De cember 24-25 and January 1. Henry W. Cheney, director of the center, said that the center, which is rapidly becoming a tourist landmark in the South, would be closed those days so that staff members could spend more of the holiday season with their families. The Keowee-Toxaway Visitors Center is normally open seven days a week. JEWISH ’CHRISTMAS’ The Jewish "Christmas”, called Hannukah, is a gift giving season which com memorates the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem. One of the most beautiful of Jewish festivals, Hannukah does not occur on a fixed date each ear, but eight nights are used or gift-giving. death of dormant buds. If there are enough bud cankers, they may run together, killing a twig or branch. The cankers on limbs and trunks are often hard to distinguish from damage of :old injury. How is it Spread? Pruning tools; It has been de monstrated that the bacteria can be spread by infected pruning tools. Therefore, if you have the bacterial canker organism in one tree, it may be carried to other trees during the pruning operation. Bud Propagation: Bacteria can be carried on the budwood from an orchard to the nursery, and from the nursery back to the orchard. There is no indication that this is a major means of spread, but it is a possibility. Insects and Blowing Rain: Insects and blowing rain com monly spread bacteria, and they undoubtedly play a part here. Thus far no specific insect was found involved in the spread of this disease. Recommendations: There is no known control for bacterial canker. However, by following these suggestions the growers will lessen the chances of damage to their trees. 1. Prune trees only after they are fully dormant, preferably after January 1. Trees can probably be pruned safely on into bloom. 2. Dip pruning tools between trees in a solution of nine parts water and one part ordinary clorox. This is particularly im portant if you suspect that you have bacterial canker in your orchard. Be sure to clean and oil pruning tools at the end of each day of use. 3. Cut out dead and weaken ed limbs and pull out dead trees during the late spring or early summer when the disease is the least active. 4. Maintain your orchard at the proper nutritional level. The trees with excess growth appear to be more susceptible to bac terial canker, cold damage and other disorders. PEACE Let us renew the message of Christmas at this season. SHERIFF B. EUGENE SHEALY and Deputies Newberry County The County Agents Column Peach Tree Canker: Since about 1960, peach grow ers in the southeastern United States have become increasingly aware of the short life of peach trees in this area. Bacterial can ker, or “blast”, can be a major cause of early tree death. No control is known for the disease, but growers can reduce the chances of severe losses by fol lowing certain practices. We wish to report the association that was observed between early pruning and damage from this disease. Symptoms: As the name indicates,the di sease is caused by a bacterium, Pseudomonas syringae. The trees are infected and damaged mostly during their dormant period, but the effects of the disease are most striking around blossom time. Often damage is indicated by delayed blooming Dr leaf development. Quite of ten only part of the tree will show this damage, and half or two-thirds of the tree will re main healthy. Cankers are produced under :he bark in various parts of the tree. These appear as reddish- Drown areas and often have a ‘sour sap” smell. As the sea son progresses these cankers ap pear as sunken areas on the tree; by this time the damage is done.
