Our first President started
the precedent of holding open
house for the general public
on .January 1. He and his wife,
Martha Washington, continued
such social affairs during the
seven years the national
capitol was in Philadelphia.
Although John and Abigail
Adams moved into the White
House in Washington, D. C.
before it was completed, they
managed to hold a reception
there on New Year’s Day in
1800.
Thomas Jefferson followed
their example. In 1804, for
example, he held open house
from twelve noon until 2 P.M.
During this period a large
number of guests arrived, in
cluding "most of the respect
able people from Washington
and Georgetown”. On this
notable occassion, the Marine
band played, and abundant
refreshments were served.
Other Chief Executives con
tinued this custom and various
Washington social leaders re
ceived friends and constituents
on New Year’s Day.

A beautiful custom that
originated in Austria is the
Advent Wreath.
The wreath is made of pine
or holly and has four candles
in it. One candle is lighted on
each of the four Sundays pre
ceding Christmas, while one of
the children reads a part of the
Christmas Story from the
Bible. All four candles are
lighted on Christmas Day.
Another custom observed
by many Austrian families
is the placing of apple twigs
in a vase of water on St.
Bar bar’s Day. December 4 th.
If the twigs blossom by Christ
mas . Eve, good fortune will
come to the family, and the
more blossoms there are, the
greater the luck.
SUPERSTITIONS
In some parts of the
f 'lobe, people believe that a
ull salt shak er foretells a
good year. India serves
only new foods at this date,
as they think the cooking of
new rice assures prosperity.
Rice cakes are used as New
Years offerings in Ceylon.
At some places, there are
certain taboos on certain
edibles on this date. For ex
ample the Chinese refrain
from rice, and Germans
from dumplings.
