Santa Is Placed
In Nativity Scene
In years, actually centuries,
it has always been .Joseph,
Mary, the infant Jesus, a
couple of sheep and perhaps
the shepherds and three wise
men who were depicted in
Nativity scenes.
Last year the Queen of
Angels Catholic Church in Port
Angeles, Washington, added a
new figure — Santa Claus.
It was explained that many
Christians depend upon Christ
mas sales for their livelihood,
"and they ought to be able tc
consecrate this part of their
lives to Cod”. A priest said,
"We must get rid of this dichot-

omy, unless we’re still laboring
on the false idea that the body
and the soul are seperate.”
And a reverent Santa in the
crib scene, he continued, fol
lows the message that the
church must incorporate the
world”.
Accepting Santa for the
symbol of commercialization
and then including him in the
religious scene will help the
church get its message across
that man’s whole life is per
meated with religion.

girls on Christmas morning.
At peak of production, the com

Presents, Christmas
Go Together
"Christmas won’t be Christ
mas without any presents,”
grumbled Jo, lying on the rug.
This of course is the opening
line of LITTLE WOMEN, the
classic by Louisa May Alcott,
which, in its Centennial
Edition will probably appear
on many a young gift list this
year. Five million copies in the
U.S. and has been translated,
into thirty languages. While
its sentiment and moralistic
platitudes may be dated, the
book has much to recommend
it even to young swingers. Per
haps it’s the emphasis on in
nocent simplicities — the Christ
mas theatricals, the muffins
taken to the poor family — that
heart-breakingly reveals how
far we’ve all come from in
nocence.
Plant Of Peace
Is Mistletoe
The hanging of mistletoe at
Christmas is an English
custom which goes back to the
Druid beliefs. This plant was
thought to bring good luck,
and was so sacred that if
enemies met beneath the mistle
toe in the forest, they would
lay down their arms, exchange
greetings, and keep a truce
until the next day.
From this custom grew the
practice of hanging the "plant
of peace” over a doorway at
Christmas as a symbol of
good will to all comers. A kiss
under the mistletoe was a
uciiai anvju v* anvt a
promise of marriage, and an
engagement announced in this
way was thought to bring
happiness, good fortune and
long life to lovers.
