C., Thursday, Dec. 18, 1969 Green Thumb Club observes anniversary The Green Thumb Garden Club celebrated its 20th Anni versary Monday, December 8 at 7:30 with a Christmas Din ner at the lovely home of Mrs. Guy Whitener. Jr., a charter member. Other hostesses were Mrs. Gurnie R. Summer. Mrs. Billy O'Dell and Mrs. W. A. Kennedy. A delicious three- course dinner was served to members, husbands and friends. The president. Mrs. Bloomer F. Hawkins, welcomed guests and gave a special welcome to Mrs. J. P. Ferguson (Mrs. W.E. Monts), a charter member, who has returned to Newberry and rejoined the club. Mrs. Haw kins presented a past president pin to Mrs. Charles Owens for her loyal service. Appropriate tile plaques of South Carolina were given each member by Mrs. Gurnie Summer in com memoration of the club's anni versary. Mrs. Hawkins gave a summary of the club’s history. The Green Thumb Garden Club was organized on Decem ber 12. 1949 by Miss Grace Summer and Mrs. Alma Duf- ford at Miss Summer’s home on Caldwell Street. Charter members were Mrs. Carter Ab rams, Mrs. Ed Blackwell, Mrs R. D. Coleman, Miss Mary Ann Davis, Mrs. C. A. Dufford, Mrs. Tom Fellers, Mrs. Hugh Foster, Mrs. Jesse Frank Hawkins, Mrs. Cyril Hutchinson, Mrs. W. E. Monts, Mrs. Gerald Paysinger, Mrs. Homer Schumpert, Mrs. G. B. Sessions, Miss Grace Summer, Mrs. Gurnie R. Sum mer. Mrs. Guy Whitener, Sr., Mrs. Guy Whitener, Jr., Mrs. Arthur IKvyer, Mrs. M. K. Wicker, Mrs. Paul Heisey, Mrs. F. A. Truett and Mrs. C. J. Rice. Miss Grace Summer served two and one-half years as the club's first President. With her guidance, the members partici pated in Newberry’s first Flow er Show, which was held in the Community Hall. The Show was a great success with many out of town visitors. The Green Thumb Garden Club won the sweepstakes in Horticulture, which created much interest through the years. While Miss Summer was President, the club was federated with the Nat ional Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc. and the City of New berry was made a Bird Sanc tuary. The Club’s first long range project was the beautification of the grounds around the city water and light plant. Bulbs and shrubs were planted. The members worked on this pro ject until they were made cus todians of Wells Park when it was deeded to the City by Mr. Fulmer Wells. They have made many improvements in this park through the years. The Club has had several Flower Exchanges and has co operated with the other clubs in staging the Flower Show at the County Fair each year. As a member of the Newberry Council of Garden Clubs, they have worked with the Council in every undertaken project. New tax forms to be used Each of the 18 million tax payers in the United States who filed the now discontinued card 1040-A form last year will re ceive a postcard shortly ex plaining the change to the new consolidated 1040 Form, H. M. McLeod, District Director of Internal Revenue for South Car olina, announced. This year, all taxpayers will receive a larger, complete tax package that includes the one- page basic 1040 and additional pages or schedules, which may or may not be used, according to the taxpayer’s needs. Past 1040-A users wall find that, ex cept for a few lines, the new 1040 asks for the same informa tion as the old card form, and that they will probably not need to fill out more than one sheet of paper to prepare their tax returns. The principal reason for IRS changing to the new form was to enable taxpayers to take full advantage of all the tax bene fits the law provides.
