ALTIMON DOY BECK Mr. and Mrs. Michael Lawson Youmans announce the marriage of their daughter, Barbara Helen to Mr. Altimon Doy Beck on Sat urday, Nov. 29 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Radium Springs, Ga. The Rev. John L. Jenkins officiated. The bride wore a street-length white wool knit with fitted waist, long sleeves and an A-line skirt, accented by two center pleats. A satin headpiece completed the ensemble. Mrs. Beck is a graduate of Sweet Briear College and a pros pective candidate for the doctorate degree at Emory University. She was presented at the 1963 Cotillion Ball in Newberry. She is currently an Instructor at Albany Junior College. Mr. Beck is a graduate of Georgia Southern College, where he received the A.B. and M.S.T. degrees. He held a teaching assist- antship while there. He is presently an assistant professor at Al bany Junior College. Mr. and Mrs. Beck will live in Albany. Academy to have Christmas play The Newberry Academy in vites its patrons and friends to join students of the fourth, fifth and sixth grades in their oper etta, “What is Christmas?” This is the story of “Sparkle”, the very youngest of the fairies, who was so eager to find Christ mas that she came early and lost her way. Because of the limited audi torium seating capacity, the play was scheduled for two suc cessive nights, Wednesday and tonight at 7:30. There will be no admission charge but an of fering will be received at the door at the close of the per formance. The proceeds will be added to the building fund for the new academy. Admission is by ticket only. Parents are expected to get their tickets through the stu dents. Other friends may se cure tickets by calling the Aca demy office, 276-2760. JASPER CHAPTER MEETS FRIDAY The Jasper Chapter of The Daughters of the American Re volution will meet at the home of Mrs. P. K. Harmon on De cember 12 at 4 p.m. The host esses will be Mrs. Earl Bergen, Mrs. A. B. Schriver, Mrs. E. R. Baker, Mrs. Carl Amick and Mrs. Meredith Harmon. Mrs. John Cabasco, operator of Trader John, will talk on “Old Glass and Silver”. IS CHAIRMAN IN LAW SOCIETY The University of South Caro lina School of Law has charter ed an International Law Society which is an affiliate of the Asso ciation of Student International Law Societies which has its headquarters in Washington, D. C. The purpose of the S. C. Society will be to stimulate an active interest in the fields of international and comparative law. W. Frank Partridge, New berry, will serve as Chairman of the Speakers and Program Committee. Heyward Clarkson, Columbia, will serve as Presi dent. College to add speech major A major in speech and dram atics at Newberry College has been approved by the College’s faculty; it will go into effect in September 1970. The speech-dramatics curri culum is designed for students desiring a general speech pro gram, for students desiring to teach speech in the public schools, and for students pre paring to continue their educa tion in graduate school, accord ing to Dennis Sanderson, assis tant professor of speech and dramatics. The general speech students and the education students will obtain a knowledge of all areas of speech including broadcast ing. The dramatics students may obtain instruction in one or more of four areas of spec ialization: criticism, design, his tory and-or production. The dramatics students work in a new fully-equipped 300-seat theatre and broadcasting stu dents in the new studios of the Newberry College Broadcasting Service. In addition to the con ventional proscenium staging, the acting and seating areas may be altered to arena stag ing. The Broadcasting Service is a student organized and oper ated radio staff presently broad casting through the commercial facilities of radio station WKDK in Newberry. The Newberry College Theat re is the department’s product ion organization. Participation in the four annual productions is open to all Newberry College students. Roles are cast from open auditions and back-stage work is assigned on a volunteer basis. Dramatics students also have an opportunity to join the Beta Tau chapter of Alpha Psi Om ega, the national honorary dra matics fraternity. In addition to the grants, the work-study plan and scholar ships available to all Newberry students, the new Department of Speech and Dramatics offers three undergraduate assistant- ships; theatre technical assist ant, theatre lighting assistant and department administrative assistant. - PASTOR SPEAKS AT ACADEMY The joy of Christmas was the theme of the devotional service conducted by the Rev. Edward L. Bland, pastor of the Asso ciate Reformed Presbyterian Church, at the Newberry Aca demy chapel program last Fri day morning. He pointed out that our great composers had written their most famous mus ic on the Christmas theme. He emphasized the fact that the joys of the happy Christian fes tival make people sing all over the world. During the program, a num ber of Christmas hymns and carols were used. Pastor Bland was presented by Catherine Baker of the 5th grade, a member of his con gregation. ELECTED MEMBER SCIENCE ACADEMY Dr. Karlheinz Brandes, asso ciate professor of chemistry at Newberry College, has been el ected to membership in The New York Academy of Sciences. Dr. Brandes has been a mem ber of the College faculty since 1965. LINDA KAY DENNIS Mr. and Mrs. James Hawkins Dennis announce the engagement of their daughter, Linda Kay, and Dr. Jaren Van Den Heuvel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry John Van Den Heuvel of Oskaloosa, Iowa. The wedding is planned for Saturday, January 31, 1970, at 5 o’clock in The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Newberry. No formal invitations will be sent in Newberry but friends and relatives are invited to attend. The bride-to-be. graduated from Newberry College with an A.B. degree in Elementary Education and has done graduate work at the University of South Carolina. She is presently on the faculty of Saluda River Elementary School, West Columbia. Dr. Van Den Heuvel received his B.A. de gree from Calvin College in Michigan, his M.A. in clinical psy chology and his Ph.D. in school psychology from the University of S. C. At present he is director of Pupil Personnel Service for Arlington County Public Schools, Arlington, Va. Students spark blood donations Newberry College students and townspeople had to stand in line at Newberry College last week to give 135 pints of blood when the American Red Cross Bloodmobile from Columbia vis ited the campus. “We were overwhelmed by the response of our students to the visit,” Chaplain Herry Web er, the coordinator of the local blood drive, said. The goal of the drive spon sored by the six fraternities and sororities on the campus, was 100 pints of blood. “The community of Newberry should be proud of the Greek organizations at the college who took the lead in sponsoring and organizing this community-ser vice project,” Chaplain Weber added. “Too many times the fraternities and sororities are criticized for being involved on ly in social projects.” In addition to the 135 donors, over 35 were turned down be cause they had colds which pre vented them from giving their blood. A trophy was awarded to the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity for having 67 members or 85 per cent of their membership don ate their blood. The sponsoring organizations hope to have the bloodmobile visit the campus on a regular basis. L. Sligh, Route 2, was assigned Nov. 13 to Uie Americal Division in Vietnam. WICHITA FALLS - Gary M. Janovsky, whose wife, Suzanne, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. J. Roberts of Prosperity, has been promoted to sergeant in the U. S. Air Force. Sgt. Janovsky, an aeromedi- cal specialist at Sheppard AFB, Tex., is assigned to the USAF Regional Hospital. He is a 1966 graduate of the Madison, Ohio, Memorial High School. VIETNAM — Army Private First Class Richard A. Sligh, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert USS INDEPENDENCE—Avia tion Electronics Technician Air man John W. Still USN, husband of the former Miss Nina Page of Little Mountain, is serving aboard the attack aircraft car rier USS Independence. The ship recently participated in the NATO training exercise Peace Keeper in the Atlantic.
