BETH ARDEN ANDERSON ALYCE JULIA YOUMANS
The Newberry Cotillion Club
held its fall dance on Decem
ber 5th at the Country Club of
Newberry. Highlighting the
dance was the presentation of
two lovely young ladies. The
debutantes were Miss Alyce
Julia Youmans. daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. M. L. Youmans, and
Miss Beth Arden Anderson, the
daughter of Dr. and Mrs. E. M.
Anderson.
Escorting Miss Youmans was
W. Jeffrey Smith of Alexandria,
Virginia. Her marshall was Mi
chael V. Avery of Sumter. Miss
Anderson was escorted by Jerry
Williams of Brevard College,
Brevard, N. C. Her marshall
was Earl W. Wade of Presby
terian College in Clinton.
Miss Youmans was attractive
ly attired in a dress of white
peau de sole fashioned with a
scoop neckline. The full prin
cess skirt fell from an empire
waist line which was highlighted
with jeweled trim. Miss Ander
son's dress was fashioned of
white antique satin featuring a
high neckline and stand-up col
lar. The neckline was exquisite
ly trimmed with sequins and
jewels. The debutantes were pre
sented lovely nosegays of white
flowers centered with a white
orchid and nested in dainty
lace.
The receiving line was com
posed of Mr. John B. Lindsay,
President of the Cotillion; Mrs.
Lindsay; Mr. Eugene C. Grif
fith, Secretary-Treasurer of the
Cotillion; Mrs. Griffith; and the
two debutantes and their moth
ers.
The club was appropriately
decorated in Christmas colors
of red, green, and gold. The
front door presented a beauti
ful focal point being covered
with a red velvet panel and
enhanced by an electric candel
abra with red candle lights.
Greens of boxwood and red bows
were used as a background. The
interior of the club house re
peated the color scheme using
Della Robia wreaths and gar
lands. An arrangement of red
carnations and pine in a silver
bowl, flanked by red candles
in silver candelabra centered
the debutantes’ table. Behind
the table were two green vel
vet panels with two candelabra.
The debutantes were given a
dainty silver picture frame bear
ing their initials.
Music for the dance was pro
vided by Neil Atlee and his
orchestra. Guests at the Cotil
lion were Miss Gretchen And
erson, Mr. Weldon Bonds of
Columbia, Mrs. Carabel W. You
mans, Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Beth
ea of Latta, and Mr. and Mrs.
R. R. Bruner of Columbia.
Prior to the festivities at the
Country Club, a drop in was
held for the debutantes, the of
ficers and governors of the Cot
illion at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. H. B. Kirkegard. The Kirk-
egard home was enhanced by
two. beautiful arrangements of
purple orchids. Delectable ap
petizers and punch were served
to the guests from a beauti
fully appointed table.
ATTENDANT AT
HOMECOMING
Dale Morris, daughter of Mr
and Mrs. J. M. Roland, Jr., 1420
Kate Street, has been selected
as a Homecoming attendant at
Erskine College.
Dale, a senior French major,
will be presented, along with
the nineteen other attendants,
during the halftime of the Er-
skine-Lander Homecoming bask
etball game Saturday, Decem
ber 13 One of the girls will be
crowned Homecoming Queen at
that time.
Dale, a 1966 graduate of New
berry High School, has been a
member of the Erskine Players,
the chorus and the French dub.
Blue sticker
soon obsolete
The South Carolina Highway
Department’s blue motor ve
hicle inspection sticker will pass
into oblivion at midnight De
cember 31.
The blue inspection sticker
was issued during 1968 for 415,-
000 vehicles whose owners had
them inspected voluntarily. All
these vehicles either have al
ready been re-inspected, or are
due for inspection during De
cember
Inspections since January
have been certified with orange
stickers bearing 1970 expiration
months, and green stickers ex
piring in 1971 will be issued
starting January 1.
Although figures for Novem
ber will not be tabulated until
later this month, W. H. Kay,
chief motor vehicle inspector,
believes that motorists have
understood the inspection pro
cedure since the inspection by
last license digit schedule end
ed October 31.
“Every motorist must be
responsible now for having his
vehicle inspected in the expir
ation year indicated on the in
spection sticker, in the month
punched on the outside edge
During December, for example
the last of tne blue stickers,
with December punched on the
edge, remind owners whose cars
are due for r-inspection this
month,” Mr. Kay said.
During October, 117,031 ve
hicles were inspected, to bring
the total inspected this year to
1,033,872. Mr. Kav believes that
perhaps 100,000 were inspected
during November.
SPECIAL CLASS
IS ENTERTAINED
The Newberry Garden Club
held its annual Christmas meet
ing at Mrs. Pugh’s classroom
at Mollohon School with the
Newberry Junior Garden Club.
The Christmas program was
given by the children after
which refreshments were served
and presents distributed.
Hostesses were Mrs. Bob
Bruner, Mrs. Eugene Griffith,
Mrs. Jimmy Coggins and Mrs.
Louis C. Floyd.
VIETNAM — Marine Corpor
al Stephen W. Mills, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Beamon L. Mills
of 1609 Wilson Road, received
the Combat Air Crew Insignia
while serving with the First
Marine Aircraft Wing in Viet
nam.
The Wing is the air arm of
the Third Marine Amphibious
Force in the I Corps Tactical
Zone of VIETNAM. It operates
several hundred aircraft includ
ing fighter, attack, reconnais
sance, helicopter and transport
aircraft.

field. Airman Boland is a 1969
graduate of Newberry High
School.

Hubert D. Thomas, brother of
Mrs. Betty T. Williams, Route
1, has completed basic training
at Lackland AFB, Tex. He has
been assigned to Keesler AFB,
Miss for training in the admin
istrative field. Airman Thomas,
a 1965 graduate of Newberry
High School, received his A.B.
degree in 1969 from Newberry
College.
LUZON — Staff Sergeant
Charles E. Singley, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Lang B. Singley of
937 Gilder St. is a member of
the U. S. Air Force unit that
has been awarded the Presiden
tial Unit Citation.
Sgt. Singley is a radio opera
tions supervisor with the 1st
Mobile Communications Group,
headquartered at Clark AB, the
Philippines.
The sergeant is a 1956 grad
uate of Gallman High School
and has served in Vietnam. His
wife is the former Ethel M.
Gary.
J. Roy Gasque
rites Monday
James Roy Gasque, 66, of
Clinton died Saturday.
He was a native of Marion,
but had lived in Clinton for 35
years. Prior to moving to Clin
ton, he owned and operated
Gasque Buick Company in New
berry.
He was a son of the late
James Maston and Lula Hamm
Gasque and owned and oper
ated Gasque Buick Co. in Laur
ens. He was a member of
Broad Street United Methodist
Church and was a veteran of
the U. S. Air Corps.
Survivng are his wife, Mrs.
Celia Latimer Gasque; a daugh
ter, Miss Celia Gasque of At
lanta, Ga.; two sons, Jim, of
Greenville and Dick of Clinton;
five sisters,among whom is Mrs.
Eloise Dennis of Newberry; four
brothers and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Monday in Clinton with burial
in Rosemont Cemetery.
