C., Thursday, Dec. 11, 1969 — PAGE 3 Council honors law officer One of the men who helped “save Charleston” from violent conflict in 1969 was awarded a special commendation by the Christian Action Council last Thursday for his leadership dur ing the hospital strike. Police Chief John F. Conroy of Charleston was cited by the state’s inter-church Council for helping to create “a fine exam ple of police-community rela tions” and for the “fairness and restrained firmness” of law en forcement officers during the long period of public uncertain ty- The Rev. J. Marvin Quarles, pastor of Whitmire Wesleyan Church, and the Rev. Dr. Neil E. Truesdell, pastor of Ave- leigh Presbyterian Church in Newberry, were two of the more than 200 church leaders in at tendance for the occasion. The “Christian Action Award” was made by Attorney General Daniel R. McLeod during the Luncheon of the 36th annual meeting of the Council. YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY The Greenwood Social Secur ity Office is well into the year end rush. People are hurrying into the office to file end of the year retirement claims. “This is an annual thing with us,” said H. M. Spiller, field repre sentative, “and we always ex pect to receive more claims at this time of year. Naturally too, this is the time of year when my staff members like to take vacations but we anticipate no unusual delay in claims process ing. I would suggest that any one planning to retire either this month or within the next few months telephone the Social Security Office in advance of their retirement. This way we will tell them what they will need to do and what evidence will be required in order to get their Social Security checks started.” Some people’s first contact with the Social Security Office is long after they could have received their first social secur ity check. This means of course that these people have in many cases retired and their income has already been reduced and they are without the supplemen tal income provided by their social security check. Mr. Spill er said that it is much better to contact the social security of fice in advance of your retire ment. “By contacting us early, we will be able to tell you what you should bring with you when you come in to file your retire ment claims and if you contact ns early, we will be able to get your retirement check to you the first month it is due.” The Greenwood Social Secur ity Office is located at 219 Mag nolia Avenue, telephone 223-1711 and is open from 8:45 to 5:00 Monday through Friday, and 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Sat urday. City Building Permits Building permits totalling $6,- 090 were issued by the City last week to: Carolina Rental and Develop ment Corp., repairs, 1802 Har rington St.; John T. Gallman, erect building, South St.; Wright Cannon, repairs, 712 Caldwell St.; D. P. Folk, repairs, 1220 Summer St.; and Joe Gary re pairs, 831 Wardlaw St. Need license for mini-bikes Santa Claus could be creat ing a violation of the law if he brings a mini-bike to a young ster who doesn’t have a driv er’s license. The South Carolina Highway Department points out that even mini-bikes are included in the requirement that all two-wheel motorized vehicles be licensed and covered by insurance and that the drivers have a valid driver’s license. A person must be 15 years of age to begin learning how to ride a mini-bike or any two- wheel motorized vehicle, and this requires a driver’s permit to use while learning if the pub lic streets and highways are used. After 15 days, the beginning driver may stand the regular driver’s license examination, in cluding the road test. At pre sent no special license is re quired for operators of motor cycles or other two-wheel mot orized vehicles, but it soon will be. An approved safety helmet, and eye goggles or a face shield or windshield also are required. Owners of mini-bikes must comply with the state’s safety responsibility law, just as auto mobile owners must. This re quires either liability insurance with an approved company in the amount of $10,000-$20,000- $5,000, or payment of a special uninsured motorists’s fee of $5 for vehicles of 10-brake horse power or less. Parents may ask about their youngsters using mini-bikes on private property. The Highway Department spokesman said this is not covered by law and is permissible. Are on honor football team Three Newberry College foot ball players have been named to positions on honor football teams, according to Coach Fred Herren. Junior Larry Howe, a 195 lb. offensive tackle from Charlotte, N. C. and senior Dennis Swy- gert, 220 lb. defensive guard from Greenville, Tenn. v, ere picked for the Ail-Carolinas con ference squad by the coaches of the six-team conference at the conference’s fall meeting in Winston-Salem, N. C. last week. Lenoir Rhyne placed six play ers on the 24-man squad. Elon, the conference champion, and Catawba, which finished in last place, each had five represen tatives on the team. Presbyter ian and Guilford placed three each and Newberry the two re maining selections. The third honoree on this year’s squad is sophomore Say lor Fox, 180-pound defensive safety from Buena Vista, Va. He was named to the District 6 NAIA team. ARMY GREEN BY SFC E. L. Flood Controllers: Few people realize what an important job the Army does here in the United States for all of us. We’re thinking of the excellent work done by the Corp of Engineers. The Corps is res ponsible for flood control pro jects and, among other things, the planning, maintenance and improvements on all rivers, har bors and waterways in the Un ited States. It operates the locks on the Ohio River, main tains the American part of the St. Lawrence Seaway and dred ges New York harbor. Next time you see a red castle on a white sign or a red flag with white castle in its center, you will be watching the U. S. Army in action in the United States. The castle is the symbol of the Corps of Engineers. Kelly said, . .We brought in these young men with long hair. . .undoubtedly of the type who were part of this rebellious spirit on cam puses of high schools and cities and towns throughout the coun try. As soon as you brought them into service, two or three days later, they were plugging and doing a great job for their country. . .” Really now, that soon? Shall we take a survey of opinions from the Ft. Jack- son DPs who really know? The End of Drilling? Here’s news that everyone will be pleased to hear. Army den tists have developed a way of filling teeth without drilling. And, it only takes a few min utes to fill a cavity. The meth od involves cleaning the cavity opening with an instrument and then filling the opening with a special compound. Water is ap plied and the filling hardens. Right now, the filling will hold for six to nine months but den tists hope to achieve permanent fillings in the future. The cur that the filling acts as a stop gap measure. Recruits enter the service with an average of sev en cavities per man. Through the new method of filling the teeth, a man’s cavities can be temporarily filled within min utes and he can complete his basic training without further danger to his diseased teeth.
