of the Newberry High School
Band Parents Association, mem
bers of the band and its dir
ector. Miss Lorraine Paris.
The reason for this embar
rassment is bcause some fifty
of you were kind enough to buy
tickets from us for barbecued
chickens last Friday and when
you came to pick up your chick
ens, they weren't there.
We still aren't quite sure what
happened. Whatever it is. it has
never happened before, and we
trust that it will not happen in
the future
Fifty out of 2200 may not
seem like many, but to us even
a shortage of one would have
been embarrassing
All concerned are extremely
sorry this happened There is
really no excuse we can offer,
because the chickens should
have been there We can only
sav that we'll do our best to
see that it doesn't happen again
and we hopf that this wall not
diseouraue you from supporting
the band in the future, as you
have m t he past
Several young people learned
last week from Judge William
Rhodes that "doing their thing"
might be all right if they are
walling to accept the conse
quences
Judge Rhodes realized that
these susceptible young people
had been led astray by some
person or persons, and it was
evident that he would have lik
ed to be facing that person or
those persons at the bar of jus
tice. He let it be known that
he would deal harshly wath
anyone who led these youngsters
from the straight and narrow.
He did not, however, just give
the boys a slap on the wrist
and turn them loose. He felt
that the "thing" they did justi
fied a little time for reflection
behind bars.
If more of our judges would
be more realistic, as Judge
Rhodes was in th s case. 1 be
heve it would not be long be
fere a reduction in the crime
rate would be seen.

City Council had a short meet
ing Tuesday night, during which
it approved purchases totaling
$18,820 for equipment for Wise
St reel Park
The purchase includes $7,193
for fencing; $3,927 for picnic
tables, park stoves, recreation

purpose tennis courts
The park is expected to be
