Local teachers rebuke NEA The Department or Classroom Teachers, Newberry County Ed ucation Association, at its meet ing on November 13, went on record as endorsing the SCEA stand on its resolution rebuking the National Education Asso ciation for its “capricious act ion” in opposing the nomina tion of Judge Clement Hayns- worth to the U. S. Supreme Court. The group also voted to send to the Executive Secretary of the NEA “our expression of disapproval of the action tak en relative to the appointment of Judge Haynsworth”. Both decisions were unani mous. S. C. Hawkins, supervisor of Certification for the State De partment of Education, explain ed and discussed with the teach ers the new certifieson pro gram for teachers in South Car olina. T p resolution of the SCEA, a c given out by President J. T .cBride Grout, said: “We abhor the capricious act ion of the NEA Executive Com mittee in its public announce ment in opposition to the nomi nation of Judge Haynsworth for the U. S. Supreme Court.” While supporting the right of organizational self expression and autonomy, the groups said, they do oppose the “taking of positions on issues which have b3en given at best a highly sup erficial analysis of the factors relating o such positions”. According to the resolution, the NEA Executive Committee violated a number of ethical, professional and protocol con siderations. The NEA made no effort to communicate with state asso ciation affiliates concerning any position to be taken on the nom ination, the resolution said, “and such arbitrary action violates the concept of professional eth ics and protocol between a nat ional association and its state affiliates.” “The nomination and confirm ation of justices to the Supreme Court are responsibilities of the executive and legislative bran ches of the federal government and are not a function of the NEA or its executive commit tee”. The NEA action, the resolu tion claimed, “will ultimately reflect improper judgment on the part of its executive com mittee and reduce the associa tion’s effectiveness as the voice of education in the United States “The prestige and respect of the NEA in South Carolina has been seriously impaired by this action, and will make it in creasingly more difficult for el ected state and county leaders, as well as staff, to promote the concept of professional unity in local, state, and national organ izations.” The S. C. groups said the NEA committee has not had the priv ilege of reviewing all testimony relative to the nomination and ‘thus any position taken would be premature and improper.” USS BON HOMME RICHARD —Airman Boyce C.
