Wheeler, Route 1, Prosper ity, was assigned September 22 to the 5th Infantry Division, (Mechanized) in Vietnam as a reconnaissance specialist. VIETNAM — Army Private First Class Virgil Bates, Jr., 20, whose parents live on Route 1, Prosperity, was awarded a Certificate of Achievement on September 22 while serving with the 13th Artillery in Vietnam. He earned the award for mer itorious service as a radio oper ator in Service Battery, 2nd Battalion, 13th artillery. The 26-year-old soldier enter ed the Army in January 1969 and was stationed at Fort Jack- son before arriving in Vietnam last July. Pfc. Bates graduated from Gallman High School in 1966. JACKSONVILLE - Person- elman Seaman C. W. McCartha, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. John C. McCartha of Route 1, Pros perity participated in decom missioning ceremonies of the Heavy Photographic Squadron 62 at Jacksonville, Fla. VAP 62 has served in every continent in the world during its 17 years of active service to both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets. The squadron was aw arded a Navy Unit Commend ation in 1963 for its involvement in the Cuban Crisis. THAILAND - U. S.Air Force Technical Sergeant William W. Long, son of Mrs. Curtis D. Long of Route 1, Prosperity, is on duty at Ubon Royal Thai AFB, Thailand. Sgt. Long is an aircraft main tenance technician assigned to the 497th Tactical Fighter Squad ron, a unit of the Pacific air Forces Before his arrival in Thailand, he served at Eglin AFB, Fla. The sergeant attended Pros perity High School. His wife, Edna is the daughter of Mrs. Elbert Bowers of Prosperity. VIETNAM - U. S. Air Force First Lieutenant James B. Park, son of Dr. and Mrs. Conrad B. Park of 2016 Forest St., New berry, has been decorated with the Bronze Star Medal at Bien Hoa AB, Vietnam for meritor ious service while engaged in military operations ag inst the Viet Cong forces. Lt. Park distinguished him self an administrative, officer wi< . the III Corps Direct Air c pport Center. He was cited jr his outstanding professional ability, leadership and devotion to duty. He is scheduled for reassign ment to USAF Headquarters in Washington, D. C. The lieutenant, a 1961 grad uate of Newberry High School, received his B. A. degree in 1965 from Newberry College. He was commissioned in 1967 upon completion of Officer Training School at Lackland AFB, Tex. Notice of Election STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA) ) COUNTY OF NEWBERRY ) Notice of Special Election NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that in pursuance of a Resolu tion adopted by the County Board of Education, constitut ing ex officio the Board of Trus tees of The School District of Newberry County, the State of South Carolina, and the “School Bond Act”, codified as Sections 21-971 to 21-990, inclusive, Code of Laws of South Carolina, 1962, a Special Election will be held in The School District of New berry County, the State of South Carolina, on Tuesday, November 18, 1969. Each person offering to vote must have resided in the State of South Carolina for one year, in Newberry County for six months, and in the polling precinct in which the elector of fers to vote for three months, all prior to November 18, 1969; PROVIDED, that ministers in charge of an organized church and teachers of public schools and the spouse of any such per son shall be entitled to vote after six months’ residence in South Carolina if otherwise qual ified. 2. Each person offering to vote must have been duly registered on the County Books of Regis tration for Newberry County in the Precinct at which he offers to vote, on or before October 18, 1969, for the current decen nial (10-year) period, and must present his registration certifi cate. MAYER Commissioners of Election for Newberry County, South Caro lina NOTICE TO MANAGERS OF SPECIAL ELECTION: The Managers named in the Notice of Special Election have the power to fill a vacancy,and if none of the Managers attends, the citizens can appoint from among the qualified voters, the Managers, who after being duly sworn, can conduct the elect ion. At the close of the election, the Managers and Clerks must proceed publicly to open the bal lot box and count the ballots therein, and continue without ad journment until the same is com pleted, and make a statement of the results and sign the same. The Managers, or someone de signated by the Board, must de liver to the Commissioners of Election the poll list, the box containing the ballots and writ ten statements of the results of the election. The Managers at each pre cinct named in the Notice of Special Election are requested to delegate one of their num ber to secure the boxes and blanks for the election. Boxes may be picked up at the Newberry County Court House between 9:00 o’clock and 12:00 o’clock on Saturday, Nov ember 15, 1969.
