Mr. and Mrs. Henry Anderson of Newberry announce
the engagement of their daughter, Barbara, to Mr. Ken
C. Riebe, son of Mr. and Mrs. K. W. Riebe of Newberry.
The bride-elect is a granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. H.
Anderson of Newberry. She is a 1967 graduate of New
berry High School and is employed by Central Soya, Inc.
of Newberry. The bridegroom-elect is a 1966 graduate
of Newberry High School and is a senior at Newberry
College. He is president of Alpha Chi Theta Fraternity
and on the Dean’s List. He plans to continue his educa
tion at the University of Virginia Law School after grad
uation in June. He is employed by Owens-Illinois, Inc. of
Newberry. A December wedding is planned.
UDC Chapter
met Tuesday
The November meeting of the
Drayton Rutherford Chapter of
the U.D.C. met in the home of
Mrs. Ben Buddin with Mrs. V.E.
Shealy and Mrs. R. D. Wright
as associate hostesses.
After the meeting was opened
by the President, Mrs. R. B.
Baker, the Chaplain conducted
the opening ritual and Pledge
and Salutes to the Flags.
Mrs. Walter Summer report
ed that the gift boxes to men
overseas who were members of
the Children of the Confederacy
will be sent by Mrs. T. H. Pope
from Columbia.
Mrs. Baker attended the 73rd
Convention of the South Caro
lina UDC in Florence Oct. 11
and 12. She gave a report of
the meeting.
The next convention will be
in Greenville in October 1970.
The next meeting of the Dray
ton Rutherford Chapter will be
a Christmas party on Dec. 22
at 7:30 at the home of Mrs.
R. B. Baker. Each member was
asked to bring a guest.
Mrs. M. F. Bowler presented
Mrs. W. E. Shealy who read
a most interesting paper on
Thanksgiving, written by Mrs.
J. J. Chappell. Mrs. Ralph
P. Baker read an article giving
brief biographies of Confeder
ate leaders of Arkansas.
The president gave the fol
lowing closing thoughts:
“Th Thanksgiving season is
with us once again and I know
the spirit of gratitude reigns in
in our hearts. Count your many
blessings, name them one by
one. How good it is to live in
a nation under God where each
may carve out his own destiny
in his pursuit of life, liberty,
and happiness. May Thanks
giving. which is near, bring you
every blessing and many causes
for rejoicing and may the plan
our President is following cause
peace to descend upon our be
loved land.”
' The Chaplain closed the meet
ing with prayer.
JAYCEE-ETTES HAVE
OCTOBER MEETING
The Newberry Jaycee-ettes
held their October meeting at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh
Turner. Mrs. Ruth Phillips, vol
unteer service director of Pine-
land Institution in Columbia was
speaker for the program. Her
topic was about the children at
Pineland and how they benefit-
led from the therapy and treat
ment that is given there. Any
one wishing to visit Pineland
should contact her.
The Jaycee-ettes are collect
ing gifts to be taken to Whitten
Village in November. Anyone
interested in donating gifts is
asked to call Mrs. Billye West.
A Halloween party was plan
ned to be held at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Grady Carter.
Plan petition
backing Nixon
The Newberry College Repub
licans held a special call meet
ing Tuesday, November 4 in
Kaufmann Lounge on the cam
pus. Chairman W. Harold Koon
of the campus organization pre
sided.
During the meeting, the fol
lowing resolution was introduc
ed from the floor, discussed and
passed unanimously.
Resolved: That the Newberry
College Republicans endorse the
Statement of Policy on Vietnam
of President Nixon as stated by
him in his speech of November
3, 1969.
Whereas: The establishing of
a flexible timetable for with
drawal seems to be the only
realistic way for bringing an
honorable peace in Vietnam.
Whereas: Our actions at the
Paris Peace Talks have consist
ently sought to bring about a
cessation to hostilities.
Whereas: North Vietnam has
consistently refused to negotiate
constructively, and
Whereas: An immediate uni
lateral withdrawal of American
troops would mean chaos foi
South Vietnam.
We, the Newberry College Re
publicans, therefore express our
faith in President Nixon’s ef
forts to bring about an honorable
peace in Vietnam and pledge our
support to him in this endeavor.
The College Republicans re
iterated their support of the
President by pledging their ef
forts for a successful petition
drive to show President Nixon
that the vast majority of the
American people are behind him
in his effort to end the war
honorably.
Chairman Koon said, “Today
is a time of crisis which calls
for unity behind our President.
If unity proves impossible, it
is time for those who appre
ciate the genuine concern of
the President for an honorable
and lasting peace to support
him vocally and openly.”
Recreation Day
is featured
in magazine
Newberry’s city-wide Recreat
ion Day was given a two-page
display in the Summer 1969 is
sue of “Recreation in South
Carolina”.
The magazine published four
pictures of recreation day acti
vities, including swimming ev
ent winners, piggy-back race,
sack race and hula hoop contest.
The magazine stated:
“On August 8th the Newberry
Recreation Department held its
annual City-Wide Recreation
Day. Over 1500 persons parti
cipated and some 1,000 free
snowballs were given away.
Events in the day-long program
included sack, piggy-back,
wheelbarrow and three-legged
races as well as championships
in the Frisbee and Hula-Hoop
contests. Swimming races at
the pools, men’s and women’s
softball games and a street
dance were also held. It was
a highly successful day.”
The magazine is published by
the South Carolina Recreation
and Park Society. P. K. Fuller,
former city recreation director,
is vice president of Society.

TWO HONORS in one week
were received by Susan Little
of Cayce, a freshman student
at Newberry College. She was
elected secretary-treasurer of
the freshman class and -was
named Indian Princess of the
month by the staff of The In
dian, the student newspaper.
Miss Little plans to major in
voice and piano at Newberry.
She was named Miss Cayce-
West Columbia earlier this
year and will represent her
home town in the next Miss
South Carolina pageant. She is
the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Z. W. Little III, 205 Oak Lane,
Cayce.
