The strongly performance-per- dollar-oriented Duster 340 is powered by the modem, light weight 340 cubic-inch four-barrel engine as standard equipment, along with a new fully synchron ized floor mounted three-speed manual transmission. An im proved four-speed manual, and TorqueFlite automatic, are also available. The Valiant four-door sedan received styling and changes in trim. These include a new grille and tail lights and trim groups. The 198 cubic-inch six is stan dard equipment and the 225 cj. inch six and the 318 V-8 are op tional. The specialty-performance Barracuda is completely new, totally different for 1970, from front to rear, from the roof to the tires. This sporty new body is entirely different from Ply mouth’s compacts and includes two-door, four-passenger models in hardtop and convertible body styles. Six models in three distinct lines of the Barracuda are of fered. They are the basic Bar racuda, the two personalized versions: the luxury oriented Gran Coupe, and the ’Cude, a true high performance series with five high output engine choices. Exterior styling on all three lines of Barracuda is bold and sleek with long hoods and short decks, minimum overall height and steeply raked windshields. Barracuda boasts an exhaust ive list of optional personaliz ing equipment. These include an innovative “shaker” hood option cn the ‘Cuda series, road wheels and wire wheel cover options, AM-FM Stereo radio, luggage rack, performance axle ration packages, special paint and stripe treatments. Barracuda, and Barracuda Gran Coupe offer the 225 six- cylinder and 318 cubic-inch V-8 as the standard power plants. Optional engines are the 383 cubic-inch twobarrel and four barrel. The ’Cude series carries the special 383 performance, four-barrel as standard, with the 440 cubic-inch, four-barrel, the 440-six-barrel and the 426 street hemi rounding out a pot ent performance lineup of en gine options. Dodge has new specialty car The Dodge Challenger— an apt name for the industry’s all- new specialty compact, was shown at Smith Motor Company on Tuesday, September 23. The sport car has unique styling. The long-hood, short-decked and rounded body has an airflow pattern. At front is a thin- blade bumper. The grille is re cessed, headlights are canted and blend with the venturi styl ing. The airflow design follows to the rear section. Taillights, stop, back-up and turn signal lights are contained within a single, full-width lens, surround ed by a bright moulding. Challenger, at 110-inch wheel base, is the shortest of the 1970 Dodges. It has a wide stance, with an overall length of 191.3 inches, width of 76.4 inches, and height of 51.4 inches. Slightl} wider and some two inches longer in wheelbase than other cars in its class, Challenger has more interior space for driver and passenger comfort. The Challenger has the great est selection of engines in the specialty compact car class. The 225 CID Slant Six or the 318 V-8 are the standard six and eight-cylinder engines. A 340 CID four-barrel, 383 two and four-barrel engines are optional. The 383 four-barrel is standard and the 426 Hemi and both the 440 four-barrel and the 440 “Six- Pack” are optional on the Chal lenger R-T. The Polara and Monaco for 1970 are the most competitive, medium-priced cars Dodge has ever had. Roominess is the key to comfort in these cars, which offer more leg, knee, shoulder and head room than any other car in their class. The front end of these cars has been lengthened three inch es and the rear end shortened four inches, giving the cars a new proportion and a longer, lower “go ahead” look.
