The Newberry Sun, Newberry, S. C., Thursday, Sept. 11, 1969 — PAGE 5 Earns doctorate from Vanderbilt The Rev. Francis I. Fesper- man, associate professor of re ligion at Newberry College, re ceived his Doctor of Philoso phy degree in religion from Vanderbilt University, N a s h- ville, Tenn. in August. While studying at Vanderbilt for his advanced degree, he re ceived the Hillel Scholarship, presented to persons with sup erior academic records and pro mise of unusual professional achievement, and the Martin Luther Fellowship a Lutheran Brotherhood Fellowship present ed to teachers in Lutheran col leges and seminaries. A native of Draper, N. C., Dr. Fesperman is a graduate of Lenoir Rhyne College, Hick ory, N. C. His theological train ing was completed at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, and the Chicago Theological Seminary in addi tion to Vanderbilt University. Prior to joining the Newberry College staff in 1957, he served as pastor of Lutheran churches in Florida. Sunday service for Mrs. Counts Mrs. Jeanie Eargle Counts, 72, widow of the late James O’Neal Counts of Little Moun tain, died early Saturday morn ing at the Columbia Hospital after several weeks illness. She was born and reared in the Peak section of Newberry County and was the daughter of the late John and Irene Wes- singer Eargle. She had spent most of her life near Peak and was a member of Mt. Herman Lutheran Church and the choir. Surviving a re two sons, James W. Counts, Little Moun tain, and Carroll E. Counts of Satellite Beach, Florida; one daughter, Mrs. Joe C. Smith, Peak; three brothers, Claude Eargle, Newberry, J. Vern Ear gle, Columbia, and Elon F. Ear gle, Peak; three sisters, Mrs. Ollie Moreland, Peak, Mrs. Louise Kay, Columbia and Mrs. Mayme Shell, Peak; and nine grandchildren, also a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Sunday from her church with Rev. William B. Kyzer conduct ing the service. Interment was in the church cemetery. E. 0. Shealy dies suddenly E. Otway Shealy, 61, died on Saturday afternoon at Newberry Memorial Hospital after an ill ness of several hours. Mr. Shealy was bom and reared at Prosperity and was the son of the late D. Malcolm and Ella Bedenbaugh Shealy. He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, and had been connected with the New berry School Bus Maintenance Shop for a number of years. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ina Mae Wise Shealy, Prosper ity; two sons, Ethan W. Shealy, Chapin, and Keith W. Shealy, Newberry; two daughters Mrs. Ed Wicker and Mrs. Arnold Gil liam, both of Prosperity; one brother, Otis K. Shealy of Pros perity; three sisters Mrs. An nie Laura Harmon, Mrs. Sara Vaughn and Mrs. Elizabeth Hunter, all of Prosperity; and 10 grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday from Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. J. Hilton Roof and Dr. F. I. Fesperman conducting. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Newly-passed law is cited The following Act was pass ed by the South Carolina Gen eral Assembly on June 4th: “Section 1. Whosoever encour ages or entices or conspires to encourage or entice any child enrolled in the public elemen tary or secondary schools of this state from attendance in such public school or school program or transports or pro vides transportation in aid or furtherance of such encourage ment or enticement shall be deemed guilty of a misdemean or and upon conviction shall be fined not more than one thou sand dollars or imprisoned not more than two years or both, and for any subsequent offense shall be imprisoned not more than five years. “Section 2. This Act shall take effect upon approval by the Governor.” LOCAL UNION 324 TO MEET SUNDAY Local 324 will hold its regu lar monthly meeting Sunday, September 14 at 3 p.m. at the Mollohon Community Center. All members are asked to be pre sent. Visitors are welcome. Final rites for father and son Walter (Buddy) Randy Sei bert, 20, died Sunday afternoon at the Mills Clinic in Prosper ity. He had been in declining health for several years. His father James Ellerbe Sei bert, 71, died at his home early Monday morning. Buddy Seibert was born and reared in Newberry County and was a son of Ellerbe and Faye Garett Seibert. He made his home on Route 2 and was a member of Cannon’s Creek ARP Church. He was formerly em ployed by Neel’s Tractor Co. Surviving are his mother, one sister Miss Mary Ruth Seibert of Newberry and his grandpar ents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Gar ett of Prosperity. His father was born in Lex ington County, son of the late John Nicholas and Mary Jane Martin Seibert. He was a re tired saw mill operator and a farmer and was a member of Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Faye Garett Seibert; a daugh ter, Mary Ruth Seibert of the home; two sisters, Miss Estelle Seibert of Columbia and Mrs. Bertha Ward of Worthington, Ohio; a brother, Henry Seibert of Newberry. Double funeral services were held at 5 p.m. Tuesday from Cannon Creek Church with the Rev. J. P. McFerrin, the Rev. James Barker and the Rev. William Link conducting the ser vice.
