Gets coveted
scholarship
CLEMSON - Albert A. Ram-
age III of Kinards Route 1 is
among four incoming Clemson
University freshmen designated
as 1969-70 recipients of R. F.
Poole Alumni scholarships which
total $4,000 each over the next
four years.
Sponsored by the Clemson Al
umni Association through its
Loyalty Fund Program, R. F.
Poole scholarships are the uni
versity’s most prestigious aca
demic awards.
Other recipients are Gene L.
Dinkins of Columbia, Ralph W.
Seelke of Charleston Heights,
and Robert D. McCraw of Gaff
ney. They join 12 other students
attending Clemson on Poole Al
umni scholarships.

lar receives $1,000 per academ
ic year during his college car
eer provided his scholastic ach
ievement remains satisfactory.
During the past 13 years the
Alumni Loyalty Fund has pro
vided approximately $160,000 for
scholarships from its unrestrict
ed income.
Scholarship alone is the de
termining factor in the selection
of scholars to honor the mem
ory of Clemson’s seventh presi
dent, Dr. Robert Franklin Poole,
who was chief administrator of
the college from 1940-58.
Ramage is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. A. A. Ramage, Jr. of Kin
ards Route 1. He plans to major
in physics at Clemson.
He is a 1969 graduate of Clin
ton High School where he was
valedictorian of the graduating
class. Among his extracurricu
lar activities, Ramage was a
member of the National Honor
Society and the Chem-Bi-Phi
Science Club; vice president of
the Science Club; treasurer of
Student Council; and served as
business manager and photo
grapher of Clintonian, the high
school annual.
He was selected Star Student
in the Fourth Congressional Dis
trict and was winner of a Nat
ional Merit scholarship.

Mrs. Ruby Barnette Johnson,
62, wife of William A. Johnson
of Bush River Road, died Tues
day at a Greenville hospital.
She was born in Knoxville,
Term., daughter of the late Jos
eph M. and Lela Zimmerman
Barnette. She was employed as
a library assistant at Newberry-
Saluda Regional Library. She
was a member of Smyrna Pres
byterian Church.
Surviving also are three bro
thers, Fred A., Frank, and Carl
Barnette of Greenville; three
sisters, Mrs. Monroe Hardin of
Taylors, and Mrs. C. E. Green
and Mrs. Belton Rainey, Green
ville; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be con
ducted this (Thursday) morning
at 11 a. m. at Whitaker Funeral
Home by the Rev. James Thom
son, the Rev. T. G. Daum and
the Rev. Charles Gahagan. Bur
ial will be in Newberry Mem
orial Gardens.

County native
dies in Sumter
Vernon E. Hiller, a native of
this county, died Thursday in
Sumter. He was the son of the
late Mr. and Mrs. V. E. Hiller
and was a retired employe of
Williams Furniture Corp.
Surviving are several nieces
and nephews, among them, Eu
gene Derrick of Newberry.
Funeral services were held
Saturday in Sumter with burial
following in Rosemont Cemetery
in Newberry.
Mrs. Shearouse
dies at home
Frances Jane Shearouse, 96,
widow of the Rev. O. B. Shear
ouse, died Monday at her home
in Prosperity.
She was a native of Saluda
County, daughter of the late
Noah L. and Louisa Derrick
Black. She was a graduate of
Kee Marr College of Haggers-
town, Pa. She was a member
of Grace Lutheran Church and
a member of the Lutheran Wo
men of the Church. She was also
a Sunday School teacher.
Surviving are a son, Floyd N.
Shearouse of Asheville, N. C.;
two daughters, Mrs. J. T. Mar
tin of Laurens and Miss Eleanor
Shearouse of Prosperity; a sis
ter, Mrs. Essie B. Singley of
Prosperity; a brother, Jab as
Black of Prosperity; four grand
children and 10 great grand
children.
Funeral services were con
ducted Wednesday at 4 p.m. at
McSwain Funeral Home by Dr.
George Meetze and the Rev.
E. B. Keisler. Burial was in
Prosperity Cemetery.
