The Newberry Sun, Newberry, S. C., Thursday, August 7, 1969 — PAGE 6 WITH MEN IN The SERVICES VIETNAM-Navy Lt. Comdr. Wayne C. Spearman, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Spearman, Sr. of Chappells and husband of the former Miss Amelia Kenne- more of Ninety Six, is serving in Vietnam with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 133. The battalion’s base camn is at Camp Wilkinson six miles southwest of Hue, ancient im perial city of Vietnam. PENSACOLA—Marine Second Lieutenant William E. Murph, son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore F. Murph of 2114 Walton Way, has made his first solo flight. The flight was made in a T34 “Mentor” trainer after five months of intensive academic, military, and physical training, including one month of Primary Flight Training with Squadron One at Saufley Field. Naval Auxiliary Air Station, Pensacola Florida. He will continue on to more advanced phases of his flight training for approximately 13 months before receiving his pil ot’s “Wings of Gold”. VIETNAM—Army Private 1st Class Bobby G. Duke, 19, whose mother, Mrs. Vida M. Haw kins lives on Route 3, was as signed May 25 to the 1st Cav alry Division in Vietnam. His wife, Joyce, lives in Hol liday, Tex. VIETNAM Harvey Griffin, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. George R. Griffin, Route 4, was pro moted to Army sergeant June 24 near Chu Lai, Vietnam while serving as a squad leader with Company A, 5th Battalion, 46th Infantry of the Americal Divi sion’s 198th Light Infantry Bri gade. VIETNAM — Army Private First Class Leroy A. Abrams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank D. Abrams of Route 3, was assign ed to the 39th Engineer Batta lion near Chu Lai, Vietnam, May 29 as a combat engineer. SAN ANTONIO — Airman Phillip H. Hiller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jessie F. Hiller of Route 1, has completed basic training at Lackland AFB, Tex. He has been assigned to Sheppard AFB, Tex., for training in the trans portation field. Airman Hiller is a 1969 graduate of Newberry High School. USS CORAL SEA - Aviation Structural Mechanic Third Class William C. Graham, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. William F. Graham of 2017 Adelaide St., is serving aboard the attack air craft carrier USS Coral Sea. The 973-foot long carrier is currently undergoing refresher training exercises off the coast of California. These exercises, held under simulated battle con ditions, are designed to test the ship’s combat effectiveness. The Coral Sea is scheduled for its fifth tour in Vietnam later this year. Mrs. Mildred Warr is resid ing at 337 Player St. Mrs. Thea Potter is making her home at 1950 Smith Road.
