CHARLESTON, W. VA.-One
hundred of America’s top stu
dents in science will assemble
here June 20 for the Seventh
Annual National Youth Science
Camp. Henry Parr, Jr. of New
berry was selected to partici
pate by his Governor on the
basis of his outstanding aca
demic and scientific perform
ance and potential during his
high school career. A 1969 grad
uate of Newberry High School,
he will enter Furman Univer
sity this fall.
The National Youth Science
Camp, sponsored each year by
the State of West Virginia and
various private sources, brings
together the two most outstand
ing young scientists from every
state in the Nation. Campers
participate in a rigorous educa
tional and recreation program,
they work and play informally
with some of the nation’s lead
ing scientists and resident staff.
The distinction of being chosen
to represent his state at the
National Youth Science Camp is
the highest honor a science stu
dent may receive.
During the three-week camp,
the young scientists participate
in seminars, attend lectures cov
ering a wide range of subjects
and disciplines, each conducted
by an expert in the field; they
go on field trips, visit the Union
Carbide Research Center, the
National Radio Astronomy Ob
servatory, Goddard Space Flight
Center and the National Bureau
of Standards. The young men
are guests of honor at a ban
quet held for them by the Un
ited States Senate.
Work with the Camp’s IBM
1130 digital computer system,
exposure to many varied areas
of scientific, athletic and re
creational activities, trips em
phasizing archeology, astronomy
botany, biology, ecology, orni
thology, geology, zoology and
botany, biology, ecology, mi-
spelunking, and activities such
as fly tying, mirror grinding
and skeet shooting are but a
few highlights of the program.
Within the past few years, guest
speakers at Camp have includ
ed NASA Head James Webb,
Atomic Energy Commission
Chairman Glenn Seabord, the
President’s Science Advisor,
members of the astronaut team,
Vice-President Hubert Humph
rey and the late Senator Robert
Kennedy.
