25,000 campers
to be in State
“A city of 25,000 will rise
overnight then disappear five
days later,” according to the
State Board of Health sanitar
ians. They are referring to the
National Campers and Hikers
Association Convention on the
shores of Lake Marion July 13-
17 for which they have the san
itation responsibilities.
This is the first time that the
Convention has been held in
S. C., and it will not be here
again for many years because
it meets in a different state
every year. Therefore, a vast
site and complex of facilities
has to be planned and con
structed in the state where it
convenes.
The site for the state en
campment is near Eutawville
in Orangeburg County on farm
land belonging to J. Rutledge
Connor who operates a perma
nent camp and trailer ground
nearby. For the past year, with
the help of Orangeburg County
Health Department sanitarians
and others from the Board, he
has been preparing for the
area’s for 5,500 house trailers
and campers.
Accommodations for 25,000
people call for garbage and sew
age disposal, water, electricity,
and insecticide treatment; and
all of these have been planned
for Eight deep wells have been
drilled and equipped with el
ectric pumps, ground level grav
el terraces and faucets. These
are at strategic sites over the
area, and in addition two large
water trucks will circulate. The
well and truck water will be
chlorinated and under the in
spection of sanitarians at all
times.
Mr. Connor is rebuilding a
former farrowing house into an
enormous shower and toilet fac
ility, which is centrally located.
For the hundreds of trailers
with their own facilities and
containment tanks a large drain
age pit is being bulldozed else
where. A garbage service has
been arranged so that refuse
from each trailer or camper
will be picked up every day.
Some of the campsites will
be in woods, some in orchards,
and some in open fields. All will
be fogged with insecticides be
fore the encampment to control
mosquitoes and flies. Addition
al sprayings will be made dur
ing the convention if necessary.
For handicapped campers
there will be a special site with
all facilities provided. And for
groceries and other supplies a
commercial area has been set
up with shops and supply tents.
These facilities are also being
arranged with the sanitarians’
consultation.
